Hello, I have recently started stick welding,  I used MIG in the past but wanted to know how to weld properly.  I took a class at the local school and near the end. We use top of the line miller boxes at the school pretty much does everything.   At home I have an old 225 Lincoln Stick Welder that im dialing in till I figure out what I want to buy. At the school we use 7018 for all our tests and I though I would start with that, I bought a back of 7018 3/32 to practice on about 1/8the steel plate to about 1/16th wall tubing.I could not get the stick to flow well and it kept sticking, I went back to the school and found out the 7018 3/32 doesnt work to well on the machine  to bump it up to 1/8th...that actuall worked ok.Question:I think the 1/8 th is to big for the tube im using, what would you reccomend?  6013? 7014?  Would I have any issues with this welder?   This welder the stick seems to stick alto more than the miller machine...is that a difference in the extra 4 grand for the miller machines? Thank you.
Reply:Sometimes 7018 doesn't work very well on AC current.Try some 7018AC. The flux is designed for AC but it also works on DC.Your school may be using DC power as well. That may explain the difference in welding quality.
Reply:You're probably not using a 7018AC rod. I know all of them say they will work on AC, but your welder has low open circuit voltage. They make 7018 "AC" rods specifically for that. It WILL make a world of difference.6013 and 7014 would be a better choice. They both run well on AC and do not have the storage issue of the 7018's."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:The stick is:AWS 7018 3/32" 80-100 Amps, DCEP or AC Stick Electrodes 770482 after doing more research I found this on a site:"Not recommended for low-voltage AC welders"so is there a 7018 3/32 AC only to find or should i just go with another stick.
Reply:When training welders we started with 6010, but with an AC machine you can run 6011.Yes, it's not as "pretty" as 7018 but that's part of the point. 6010 is required for many root passes etc, and once you can roll with that you'll REALLY appreciate 7018. Make a "tree" and tack your test pieces to it to get a variety of positions. There is no substitute for time under da hood so weld and weld and weld and weld and weld.

Reply:You can get Lincoln 7018AC in 3/32 and 1/8 at Home Despot or Blowes. They are meant to be used with that welder.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
