I'm looking into the option of possibly building a CNC plasma table, something like 4x8 or 5x10. My shop space is very limited so I'm curious what your opinions are of setting up some kind of hoist or winch set up to pull the table up when not in use and keep it up against the ceiling. Obviously I would need to be 200% sure what I was mounting the pullies to (If I use pullies) would be strong enough to support the weight, the cable/chain would need to be overkill, and the eye bolts or shackles on the table would need to be fool proof. I would also want to make sure there were no loose parts on the table. Have any of you ever seen something like this or is this just an accident waiting to happen?John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
Reply:I never had but anything is possible. Do you have room to mount it '' hinged '' to wall ?  Only the top would be on the wall and the legs would be stored separate. You could weld 2'' schedule 40 pipe stubs on the top frame and the legs would be 2 1/2'' schedule 40 that the 2'' stub would drop into.
Reply:I would never suspend anything heavy like that. Not only all the concerns that you mentioned, but it may cause structural issues to the building. If anything were to come apart, it is a recipe for disaster. Very possible someone would be seriously injured or killed. Just not a good idea, IMO. But, the hinged table-top idea sounds reasonable, and I have seen that done by a member on another forum. He had a very small, but well-equipped shop, in California. It would probably get a lot more use too, if it was more readily accessible.
Reply:I think you would (should) always be apprehensive of suspending heavy stuff from ceiling/overhead beams, joists and such.On the other hand, the idea for a fold up table situated on a suitable wall is much safer and handier. You can still use a winch system to fold up the table top.  Ideally, your winch cable or chain end should be detachable from the table top so you can get it out of your way while the table is folded down for use.If your table top is relatively narrow (from wall to table edge), the legs could be pinned to receiver sockets on the table top for complete removal and separate storage of the legs when table is folded up, or the legs could be hinged themselves and would fold down and out as the table is lowered. If the table top is rather wide (from wall to table edge) the legs can be welded rigidly in place (if desired) as they will be near to the ceiling/overhead when the table is folded up.
Reply:I would be concerned that all the movement may knock the electronics out of "true" and cause you to have to spend an hour or so calibrating every time you used it?
Reply:I would look into building a spreader bar, so the 4-chokers lifting bridle won't put any unneeded strain on the table. I'm sure you'll want those 4-chokers short as can be to save head room. Will your trusses support this load? If not you may need to add a timber in them to attach your winch or snatch block to. May even have to build a lifting frame, something like a 4-post car lift.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Have you seen the upright plasma tables? They are built like a panel saw where the table sits at like a 5* angle from vertical and you just lay your material in. If you have some wall space this might be the way to go http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/tools...-its-edge.html
Reply:As these guys have said before, I have never heard of one before. I would not be comfortable walking under it in case something falls off. Do you need a full sized? You could just use a 4 by 4 or 2 by 2 or something smaller. No hassle of all the extra crap with making it go up and down.
Reply:It's unsafe to be under any suspended load. The upright table looks like the way to go . like the panel saw  you see in home depot
