Uphill Pipe Welding 6g 6010/7018

Okay so I Finished my pipe welding class at the local community college. The last day was the certification 6g Uphill 6" schd 80 with a 37 1/2 deg bevel  3/32 gap and land.  My root went in pretty smooth without any real humps or anything. I ground it down and proceeded with the 3/32 7018 fill and cap. The 7018 ran well except i got 2 pinholes on one of my fill passes (which i ground out). My cap could be smoother but surprisingly it was one of the best looking caps in the class. I did get a little slag on the toes of a couple passes trapped but it was nothing a little 0.40 cut off wheel and wire wheel couldnt take care of.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Reply:I too recently finished my 6G pipe work.  That root pass looks pretty good... perhaps a little thick in some places.  The cover pass could use some work... mostly keeping your lines straight.If you haven't done so already, try using a fixed shade gold lens.  I was using a 3M Speedglas AD shield, and switched to a fixed shield with a 4x5 shade 10 lens, and the difference was incredible.  My ability to keep my stringers running straight and consistent was greatly improved.You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:yea thats what I use jackson 41/2 x 5 1/4 gold shade 10 or 11 . Reply:There  are alot of inspectors that would run you off before you cut straps or they shoot it because of the messy cap and arc strikes around the weld. Stagger your stringers so they dont all stop in the same spot and make a hump that screams "here is where I started this pass!" 3/32's on a sch 80 should look slick, almost like tig. I'm glad you passed, but you need to work on smoothing it out.

Reply:Eric C -  the pictures give the cap no justice and im not just saying that. It was fairly smooth.  It could be smoother ,but the third pass is not alot higher than the prior 2, it just appears that way in the picture. I am by no means a professional pipe welder, only been practicing for 6 mo. or so. I do need to work on keeping my arc strikes within the bevel. I struck outside the bevel a couple times and I am lucky the inspector was a good guy. My cap was the smoothest in the class, I guess thats why the inspector was "lenient".  You should have seen some of the **** that passed it looked like bubblegum.    Also, would you mind posting some pics of your work so I can see a smooth one?Joker11 - I didnt get the paperwork in the mail yet. My teacher called each student that passed to congratulate them personally.  The actual certificate and card will come in the mail, probably within a few weeks.  My teacher is a great guy, he works in a shop where they repair longwall mining equipment, so he is not a pipe welder nor ever was a pipe welder.The Last class Only 2 out of 10 passed the test.
