If I wanted to mig weld up a 1" deep hole 1 1/2" inches wide. what material would I use to back plate the hole until I got the first bottom pass filled up? I was thinking copper or maybe even brass and how thick of a piece would be good? thanks for the info.
Reply:Copper or brass works fine. I've also used aluminum. 1/4" works but the thick the better. If you have anti-spatter spray, use it on the plate. If you are doing multiple holes, cool the plate off with some water before using it again. If it gets too hot, the plate will stick.CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V
Reply:copper or graphite.   I prefer the copper 3/8" or better.    and as mentioned above a good cooling is in order if there are multiple holes.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:thanks for the input. I think a good hunk of copper should do it.
