Question about brazing rods.

I recently acquired a half box of brass rods. I assume they are for brazing with an acetylene torch. They are about 20 in. long and app. 3/16 dia. Dont see any markings on box. Is there a difference in brass like there is in steel welding rods. I have about 30 lbs. of them and was wondering what I could do with them. Reply:Every brazing rod I have seen is 36" long, and 3/16 is on the large size for brazing rods. They may be just plain brass rods, i.e. for mechanical use rather than welding.Also, some brass alloys contain lead or other metals that may make them unsuitable for brazing. Personally, I'd say sell 'em for scrap and buy rods that you need.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:These are not pre fluxed. They came with a whole pallet of old rod from a welding supply . Full boxes to a few rods to a box. Thats why I believe they are for welding. Thanks Harold
Reply:I would try them with brazing flux and give the a try. If not use it up on a project with wire and thin sheet metal, you know one of the welded art things, with a wire frame.
Reply:Often there are eutectic low temp rods in a misc pile of stuff like that with about that length.  Some of their labels fall off the boxes as well though the boxes seem smaller to me.  I would try it out with tig and see if it is useable that way or makes lots of white fluff like stuff.  I guess that would be bronze if it worked.fran
