I am in the process of building a overhead bridge crane. I bought some beams and they have been welded on the flanges and have a few holes cut in the web. These would be the rails and the trolleys would ride on top of them carrying the bridge. Would the cuts or the holes hurt the structural integrity of the beam? They are 16"x 36 lb h beams . The span would be 30 ft hoist capacity would be 4,000 lb . I have studied this as posted in math and layout ( and other places ) http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...-I-Beam-Sizing.  Ran the numbers on the engineering toolbox if I have figured it right these beams would be ok. So if I weld up the cuts, and fill in the holes would they be ok in your opinion? Or should I buy new ones?

Reply:of course holes and knicks hurts the integrety, its a matter if what your using it for - will effect its durability or preformance
Reply:Hard to tell from the pics but it looks like the holes are very close to the K area.   I personally wouldnt risk standing under it with a load but its your lifeVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:Weld-one   I believe you have H/M Beams, and not an S Section - S is for shaped section, aka I Beam.  I Beams have a tapered flange like common channel [15 degrees], and trolley wheels are corresponding tapered to carry the load to the web. There are trolleys for W Sections, so be differential.Your Beams appear to be M Sections, and have the lightest load capacity due to torsional twisting. http://www.constructionknowledge.net...ural_steel.phpOpusLast edited by OPUS FERRO; 02-14-2014 at 03:06 AM.Reason: inarticulate articles
