I have two 14' galv poles 4" O.D. X  3/16 and one piece of 12' X 4" X 6" X 3/8" thick galv angle. My idea is to concrete the poles in the ground at least 2 feet and bolt the angle to the top, weld some eye bolts and make a few swings for the little ones. The area I would install this drains well in the rain and does not stay wet.I am worried, even though the structure would be strong, would the structure sway loose in the ground? Reply:Disclaimer first:I am not a civil engineer, nor am I a structuaral engineer.Speaking from life experiance in numerous industries from ski lift operations to excavation contracting and a buch of stuff in between...   I would expect that a dynamic load such as children on a swing set installed as you suggest could certainly cause the poles to wiggle loose enough to become a problem.  I think 2 feet burial is inadequate.  I would go to four feet deep.  I think you would be better off by procuring two more poles and build two A-frames and stretch a bar accross between the tops of the A as in classic swing set design.  Don't neglect angle braces on the cross bar to A frames to prevent lateral sway and collapse.  I recall when I was in my youth there was more than one manufactured back yard swing set I nearly tipped over swinging as far as I could get it going.  I remember one that had the legs burried a foot deep and they were pulling up several inches wiith each swing.  I got kicked off that one by the supervising adults.  - MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:I built a basketball backboard setup with 4'' schedule forty pipe. Went down four feet. That  made me feel more comfortable. I fabricated the in ground piece with a flange on it. Easier to level than a long piece. Anything you build you gotta look at who may use it. It starts with a 100pound kid and goes to a 250 pound man playing with the kids. Plus, no telling what the kids want you to add to it later. Deeper is better.
Reply:I have built many commercial playgrounds.  The 4"OD poles are plenty strong, like others stated go a little deeper, or at least make a substantial concrete footing, a 10' beam height is plenty.  If you could use the same pipe for the top, that would be ideal.  Commercial swing hangers are available for that size.  If you use the angle however, there are swing hangers that are cheap that are much better than eye bolts.  Google "childworks" or "SII" for those parts.  Normal eyebolts won't work long, but forged ones will, however the commercial hangers are cheaper and better. This set will be fine with no extra bracing, as long as it is deep enough and has a big footing. I built one for a church almost the same way.  I had 10' between poles, overhung the beam 2' on both ends and hung climbing ropes from the overhung sections. I put holes in backhoe tires and ran the vertical pipes through them.  the kids love climbing on them and swinging on the ropes
Reply:My church had a swing set built from the equivalent of rail road ties; it only had two swings.  I thought it was over the top because it was on a pre-school play ground.  One day about 20 older kids 11 and 12 came over and piled 3 people on each swing.  Needless to say it about came apart, and the top piece came loose, but luckily the kids stopped before it collapsed.  That was a well built swing set!  If I were building a swing set I would shoot for something strong enough to hold 350 moving lbs per swing.
Reply:Church playgrounds are the worst, they take an enormous rush of kids all at the same time.  The first 1 pole design (like posted) I made for a church had an eye bolt and a tire.  It didn't last a day.  The frame is heavy enough for anything, but I had to put commercial hangers on it.  A church definately has to made to commercial specs. I will post a link to those after I get to the shop today.
Reply:Thanks for the replies.blackbart,Thanks for the info on the source for the hangers.MillerMatic 212, Lincoln Precision TIG 225, Hypertherm 45XP
