Just looking for ideas, I need a portable reel to hold a couple hundred feet of air hose. I was thinking of a truck rim on a short axle with a hand crank, and some width to the legs for stability. It won't be truck mounted, just rolled around on my property.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:If you don't need a live swivel on it, you can use just about anything.  I made a 500 foot version of the cheap "4 fork" hose reels you see everywhere.  Just about 10 feet of 1 1/2"x1/4 flat bar, a piece of 3/4" round bar, 2 bronze bushings, and a scrap of 1/2" steel pipe for the crank. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:It would be hard to well nigh impossible to beat the Harbor Freight air hose reel for the cost of manufacture unless all your components are sourced for free or dirty peanuts. With a need for a couple hundred feet of hose you would need to gang two of them side by side and run quick disconnects from one to the other. Quality isn't half bad...one of the better harbor freight products. Priced at $19.95 each they're dirt cheap and get more so with a store coupon. Reply:Sourcing the swivels is the most expensive part of building them. For most hobbyist type purposes using a quick disconnect as a swivel will work just fine. I used some Areoquip hydraulic QDs on one, just added a little grease to them and they have worked fine for years. Otherwise buying the HF on just for the swivel is a cheap way to get them.
Reply:Not portable but here is a reel I built:
Reply:Oh its got 100 foot of hose on it now, and I am sure its good for another 75 feet of hose.

Reply:fredschrom--that is a very nice set up. may I ask what the fitting is called on the end that allows the spool to rotate without turning everything into a rats nest of hose.  And, where might I be able to get my grubby mitts on one?  In advance, Thanks! And remember if you ever have to jump out of a plane without a parachute just grab an extension cord or an air hose and jump...... because it is bound to get caught up on something on the way down......Cheers
Reply:it appears to be a live swivel. they can be found here http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-hy...ttings/=ipvrkw or at your local hydraulic shop._______________________OF COURSE I DON'T LOOK BUSY... I DID IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME
Reply:Yes that mcmaster link is the same swivel, but I bought mine from the local compressor shop and I paid about $60.00 for it. I had a reason and I added a couple of pics how I layed out my regulators and hosed it in on my truck. You don't need to spend that much though. I attached a pic of the reel in my shop, its cheezy and I bought it from Grizzly Tools http://www.grizzly.com/products/50-H...ose-Reel/H0615Point being you can buy the grizzly reel and steal the needed parts out of it and unless your doing a heavy duty mount like mine save money.
