Hi All, Years ago, I worked at a place that used to test the welders by welding together 6 flat plates with 6011 rod into a cube, weld a nipple onto one side and then pressurize it until it resembled a soccer ball. Has anyone else seen this? and was this a AWS test ? Thanks, Duhnis
Reply:I took a MIG class at the local college and that was that instructors favorite way to get you to weld evenly and square, plus it was good for getting your stops then starts overlapped so they wouldn't leak. I made 10 of them before I passed, the kids made fun of me because they could pass it in one or two tries. The Instructor and I both pointed out to them that practice makes skill, not lucky one shot passes. He put them in a water tank, then pressurized them till they leaked.
Reply:Anyone know of a video of someone creating such a cube? I would like to see the processLincoln Handy Mig

Reply:x2, I wouldn't take that test.If a company wants to do something that dangerous before they even hire you, just think of the crazy unsafe **** you're bound to find on the job [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:I used to do that with a Saturday MIG class. 1/8th material cut in 3 inch squares on the shear. To pressurize drill a 3/16 th hole on one side. We used an air gun to fill and a spray bottle with soap solution to check. Since there was no fitting you could not get much more than 20 psi before the gun leaked at the hole. If you were to weld on a fitting It could be dangerous since you could accidentally put too much pressure in.

Reply:I did that in college years agoIt teaches humility to guys who come into the class with the attitude I've been welding for years and there is nothing i am gonna learn herea lot of guys come in to welding 101 with that attitude..i was one of them But after doing that test i was put in my place which is why the instructors do it ... yes my cube looked like a rainbird Nobody likes welding 101 pre req class but it's like basic training you have no choice..Except you can quit..which to me was like admitting defeat..Or worse i can't be taught...Then why are you hereMy college professor of industrial arts at RCC. Henry Jackson was of the opinion that if you could weld it perfect with 6010 then all else should be fairly easyBut i went on to learn things that i would have never seen otherwise and never thought of and i learn something new every day ...Which is why i am on this forum to learnI'm glad i took all my classes and passed and not been one of those who stomped out the door defeated by a piece of metalMost of them were nothing but a bunch of crybaby's anywayBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ?? Reply:The company filled the cubes with oil after they cooled, hooked them up to a Porta-Pak and used hydraulic oil, not air to pressurize. I don't remember anyone discussing psi, I only remember the odd shape, a ball with corners. And yes my frst few attempts leaked ,(damn corners) LOL It was a humble experience.Duhnis
Reply:We did that test when I was in welding school. If I rememeber correctly, the cubes were 4" square, 1/8" steel. We used 6010 on one, OA on anothe, and the last one was 3/16" aluminum that was Tig. After the box was complete, we drilled a hole and welded a pipe nipple on. Hooked it up to the water, we had one chance for a redo, then it was a letter grade per leak.
Reply:We did this college. We welded a 6x6 box with a pipe fitting and pressurized with water. When we were done it looked like a ball. Some of my classmates had a seam blow apart where they didn't have good penetration. Water would spray out and they had to start over then. |
