All 1-1/4" sch 40 pipe, few pics did this about a 3 weeks ago. Attached Images
Reply:looks great.. I used to do alot of handicapped railings. Really enjoyed making them.
Reply:Do you normally use 1 1/4 pipe?  California rules are different now than the other states, but it allows up to 2"OD rails, so I have switched to 1 1/2" sch 40 for extra strength on commercial projects.
Reply:Looks good. What rod did you use for that job? Did you use fittings to make the 90 degree turns?Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power.
Reply:Looks like a nice job to do. I miss doing jobs like that at my old job.
Reply:You can use up to 2"od out here also.Job spec,d 1-1/4".Yes i used fitting for the 90,s  and  i used 6011- 3/32 on this job.
Reply:I do not know and why I am asking,Not trying to cause a problem here but is there a code requirement on the base or at the ramp/walk  to keep some one from slipping off the walk or a wheel chair wheel from going off the ramp under the rail,

Reply:Gub'mint rules-n-regs don't HAVE to make sense.  And they often don't.But a handicap/ADA ramp does need toeboards or a 'curb'.  2 inch high minimum, unless the 'outboard' edge of the ramp/landing is ~12 inches outboard of the handrail (which is acting like the 'guard' or there are walls/etc to prevent/minimize someone from slipping past the edge of the ramp (especially blind or visually impaired folks using a cane technique where the cane would 'sweep' right under the handrail and then the person would bump into the rail and/or their foot would go right off the edge of the ramp).ADA guidelineshttp://www.access-board.gov/adaag/html/adaag.htmADA ramps (with handrail and curb/toeboard requirements) in Section 4.8 (Ramps), specifically 4.8.5 (Handrails) and 4.8.7 (Edge Protection).  See also Figure 17http://www.access-board.gov/adaag/ht...res/fig17.htmlTop gripping surface of handrail is to be 34-38 inches above the ramp surface.  With caveat that if used 'primarily' by children (or as a second/secondary parallel rail as you have done), then the 'lower' rail is to be 20-28 inches above the ramp surface (28 inch max, per A4.8.5, with a recommended minimum spacing between the upper and lower rails of 9 inches to help prevent entrapment).  Cross-referencing handrail size/diameter to the more child-specific "Playground" section in Section 15 (not enforceable, but recommended) in Section 15.6.4.5.1 (Handrail Gripping Surface) is 'recommended' as 0.95 inch minimum width/diameter to 1.55 inch max width/diameter (or 'equivalent' gripping surface).  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Just to throw further fuel on the ADA fires of confusion, you also have to take into account all applicable local zoning laws.Public access or private residence?  The public access regs are pretty clear cut, although confusing and contradictory at times.  Private residence can be governed by local ordinances to "anything goes" depending on the location.  I happen to live "in the county" and no zoning exists out here on the "goat pasture" so I could have just tossed a couple of 2x4's out there and called that good.  The ramp I built for my mother was a basic design and the urgency of the situation combined with the weather conditions forced me to build the basic ramp first with provisions for adding the hand rails when possible.  The ramp worked well for the wheel chair, but the day I had to call the ambulance pointed out a couple of flaws such as the different tread with of the gurney.  The crew said the ramp was better than most but suggested I add the rails as soon as possible.  Unfortunately, I am taking the ramp out next week as Mom passed away 2 weeks ago.RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
Reply:Looking at the style of the house it will likely be followed up with balusters and such by the carpenter. It a lot faster to install all the welded rail without working around the wood work. Like the OP poster said he was just there to install the continuous railing. I bet the ramp is now done, inspected, and painted to match the house.

Reply:You are supposed to have a rail at 5" above walking surface as well.  Latest revision to life safety.  Most inspectors refer to it as "the cane tap rail".  If a blind person is swinging their cane, this gives them a barrier to feel at a lower height to keep them on the right track.Lots of toys.

Reply:Actually fdcmiami is  a clown who tries to sound knowlegable and often just ends up looking the fool.Mind you admswelding hasnt done himself any favours fighting with the child.Over here a disabled Ramp railing is quite specific and involved including kick rails, radiused turn downs tactile indicators .... the list goes on and on .Here is part of our code.BTW I wouldnt have put 4 wall brackets in that double internal corner , Im sure two would have been fine. Reply:what's my problem?  don't have one.  the reason for that is that i don't do work like this.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...light=railingsand then post pics of and expect people to drool over the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail.   you'll notice that the only ones who came to this guy's defense are thenewbies and garage welder's that have never put in a piece of rail  or worked with an inspector.   personally, i have done schools, high rises, million plus homes, several bridges.   worked with OSHA inspectors, DOT inspectors, safety engineers etc for cargill, kimberly clark, international paper, walmart, proctor and gamble etc.   so try to work around the ADD zap and do a little background and you will know what my fugin problem is.  fool.   maybe it will be one of your kids  walking down this code nightmare someday.   if they tripped and reached out to grab a rail that should have been there but wasn't and then bounced all the way to the bottom would you be so quick to defend the contractor then?   no, you would have a lawyer and would be learning new phrases suchas 'negligence per se'..banned from the sight?   why don't you and steve take this site and stick it up your axx.Last edited by fdcmiami; 08-10-2012 at 07:16 AM.

Reply:In post 31 of Fdc the railing "he is stating" is set at 38"ht. and is there so someone can grab it.I drive by this place multiple times a yr,and was there last week and the railing is still there for someone,s kids to grab should they stumble. It  hasn,t dissappeared. Now the issue of my professionalism seems to be a topic also. Most of you have seen my work and my rigs,my shop.I think i have done quite all right in the manner i have been operating my co.Have never been sued, thrown off a job,or told i was a idiot by any other tradesmen i have dealt with in the industry of construction/welding.I will admit my spelling is not always correct but  i can weld/fabricate and repair with the best of them.I would like to thank the moderators for tryin to keep this thread in order.I don,t come on this board with the intent to insult others, look better then anyone else.I have learned alot from very talented "men" on this site and would help anyone here i could, if i had the knowledge to do so.  Respectfully, Bill Adams                                                                                          ADAMS WELDING CO.Last edited by admswelding; 08-10-2012 at 07:59 PM.
