Hello Guru's, My old racing mini has a couple of problems The car handles like a go cart and is fast but since it is really lowered ( only 3" to the ground) the driveshafts angle up at 8-10 degrees this causes a lot of stress on the driveshafts and is hard on the u joints. I have 4340 driveshafts and the uprated hardy spicer ujoints. The secondary effect is it causes the front end to lift a bit when on the power. The third effect is when the axles break the wheel turns fully sideways and crash happens next. this has not happened to me YET... So i got to thinking and have come up with a way to fix it. I want to move the differential up in the case. Think of it as rolling the ring gear over the pinion till the centerline of the ring gear is where i want it. I have cut up a couple of old cases and so far it has all worked out nicely. For you machinists out there i plan on running a large rod through both bearing journals and making two spreader bars between them to hold it all true during the welding. Now for the welding part i have determined that the case is 356 cast aluminum. I can get 4043 rod from the welding store. i have bits of an old case that i can use as fillers in a couple of areas not accessible to the gun or torch. I am a fair welder and have a miller XMT 304 with a 30a spoolgun and a thermalarc 350 tig setup watercooled CK torch. Both use the same argon tank. So i was thinking my plan would be to clean the whole area and preheat with a torch the area i want to tack together with the tig  a good tack every inch or so then use the spoolgun to make passes around the perimeter of the modified area. some parts i will have to use the tig to get the weld where i want it. I may use some 1/8  angle to strengthen the sides of the diff and skip weld them over the weld on the inside for strength (both sides about 5" long). Once i get  the whole thing together i expect there will be a bit of stress built up. i was thinking of taking the case with the alignment bars to seattle heatreat and have it annealed afterwards. Does this sound like a good approach to you? anything you would add or change? thanks in advance. I will post photo's when done. Aaron Attached Images
Reply:Cv joints? Sounds crazy to me. I'd rather see a custom case get built before I tried thatHTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
