Hello all,So far I have been welding with a 3ph MIG using C15 (85/15) which works flawlessly. However welding gas mixtures are truly expensive around here so I am thinking about saving on gas and using solid core wire (from 0,8 to 1,2) for thin sheet or where weld appearance truly matters. And using self shielded flux core wire for everything else whenever I am too lazy to use my stick welder. But I am truly lost regarding which wire could suit me for general use. I am talking about BBQs, welding tables, frames for shelves, window bars, gates and such. Mild Steel and Single pass 99% of the time. I think that considering the thickness of the steel I usually weld, I should go with the smallest I have V grooved drive rolls for... which is 1,2mm.I think that locally I could source ESSAB and LINCOLN... I am going to call my LWS and see what they have in stock and see if it suits any of your recommendations. Also, do you recommend getting a dedicated gasless nozzle or could I just pull off my gas nozzle and use it as is? I read something somewhere regarding welding spatter on the threads...Thanks in advance,Mikel
Reply:For general fab work, Lincoln's NR-212, and Hobart's 21-B work great. These wires will give you trouble feeding through a regular Mig gun if you go past .045”. You really should get serrated drive rolls for flux core wire. If you're not going to do much over head welding the nozzle should not be to much of an issue.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I've had good luck in the past with SIP wires. They're nearly impossible to get over here but may be easier for you to get there. They make smaller wires than we can normally get over here which worked well for thin metal.  You need to size the wire to the thickness of the metal you're welding. Flux core wire has a sweet spot you really need to run it in and sometimes that's way to hot for the bigger wires.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:Just make sure you get an E71T-11 and you can more or less develop your own brand preferences as time goes on."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
