Anyone ever try to air arc w/ an inverter?   I never tried it.   What I mean by inverter is the smaller carry arounf light in weight welders.   When reading the sales pamphlets or advertisements from lincoln miller on inverters, the usually have list fancy list of the different processes and thing the machine can do.    I don't ever remember seeing any of them saying carbon arc or air arc in the list.    Not in the millers that I own anyway.    This only comes to my mind because I need to go somewhere to air arc some cracks out of 3/8 plate, and would like to try to keep the luggage light.  I have a cst 280.   Has anyone ever used inverters for air arc, if so, anything different about it from older conventional type machines?   Or anyone have any thoughts or guesses why or why not to use inverters for this?
Reply:Lincoln says my Invertec V350-Pro can do it. I haven't done it, and don't plan on doing it either! If for some reason I had to do a lot of carbon arcing, I'd rent an engine drive. For what I do now a days my plasma works great to scarf. Reply:I've used a 350 pro for gouging, works good.....Mike
Reply:I have an XMT 304 I never use it to gouge.  Makes me nervous even with small rods....

Reply:I've used my inverted 350 to air carbon arc cut many times.
Reply:The Miller brochure for the CST-280 says "CSTs can be paralleled for Air Carbon Arc gouging"....
Reply:We use xmt 304's and 350's all the time at work to gouge with.No problem
Reply:The 280 will do it just with a 3-16 carbon. Set your dig to max or a 6010 setting and have at it . Just watch your duty cycle. If you can hook up to 3 phase it helps the duty cycle. I have airarced quite a bit with inverters, including my own but I would much rather use someone elses machine when possible.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:I've used my old boss' Red-D-Arc which is a rebranded Miller XMT, and it worked fine. CEP, if you remember seeing DavidR's posts, he always air arc'ed with his V350Pro."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:hmm, sounds like it can be done, but I sensing a little skeptimism from some of you, and I kinda feel the same way.    It's going to be a pain move it in, but my second most economical machine for the situation would be an ideal arc 250.

Reply:used the Powcon 300 SM to air arc all the time when doing portable Rota mill work, handles 1/4" Air arc rod real well.
