I have used the search function, and yet still need advice.I am just a hobby welder and new at that, I do understand the opinions regarding 110V migs but that's what I want, so I am looking into two units the passport and the Hobart Trek and very much leaning towards the Trek.  The miller has the small CO2 cylinder but from what I have found searching this is not the preferred gas for mig use.My question is really should I just figure on using flux core and living with it's weld appearance or go to the trouble of rigging up a bottle of Ar/CO2 mix. Also any opinions of these two units, the cost difference seems to be about  $700.00 more for the passport. Thanks for your help.
Reply:Between the 2 units you listed, the better unit is the Passport hands down. Of all the 110v capable units out there you get the most output out of the passport because it's an inverter based unit. You also have the option to run on 230v power and get the max out of that machine. As long as you understand that you'll be limited to 1/8" to 3/16" on a dedicated 20 amp 110v line and stay under those limits you'll be fine. Run that machine on 230v and you can do up to 3/8" within the duty cycle limits.FC vs solid wire/gas will depend greatly on what you want/need to do. FC is a poor choice for say body work on a vehicle, but a good choice for thicker material outside. The Passport is optimized to run 100% Co2 and comes with one of the small internal painball sized CO2 cylinders. There shouldn't be any trouble going that route at the start. I'd go that route unless you really need to run on thin steel like vehicle bodies.   Then I'd opt for 75/25 to limit penetration..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:the gas shielding option for welding is much better for most unless you are doing stuff in the outside when its windy.you didnt mention the smaller lincoln units and those are work horses and you can pick them up at HD easy enoughbobs77vet/37ford4drEastwood digital TIG200HH190Lincoln Invertec 155sLincoln weldpak 100sears/craftsman (lincoln) 50a 240v buzz boxO/A rig Harris gaugesnexion cut 50 dxchicago electric (HF) 240v spot welder
