i just got this welder. http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardw...atalogId=10053when i try to weld, it does not keep a steady arc (on off a lot). and when i watch the wire while welding, the heat melts it about to the tip, then looses the arc, then the wire extends to the work piece and repeats.the feed speed is at the max speed. i tried all the voltage/amp settings, and the roller pressure thingy.does anyone know what could be wrong?thankson another note, they forgot to include the face shield.
Reply:How long of a stick out are you running? I like about 3/8 inch with Mig, 1/2 to 3/4 inch with flux core.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:im gona try to take a vid later tomarrow, it was about 3/8 to 5/8 stick out.
Reply:3/8 consistent stick out is best for me.   Is the wire bumping the base metal?Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Was the box still factory sealed? If so contact Lincoln about the missing part. They should send one. It is just a hand held shield. If box has been opened, go back to Home depot and tell them what was missing, They should get you what is missing.Do one test for me. With the welder set on max output and max wire speed, run out 6 seconds of wire and measure it. You should get 45 inches of wire fed out.Run wire for 6 seconds multiply  by 10 equals IPM  45 inches equals 450 ipm. This is the max wire speed of the welder when it is not welding. If you can't get the 45 inches then we have a feeding problem.Check your wire spindle brake, make sure it is not set to tight.Cut the wire at the drive and pull it out through the tip. Should come easy. Are you using the correct drive roll that matches the wire size. Wrong one will allow the wire to slip and not run up to full speed. If welder is still in new condition you could try taking it back and trading it for a new one.If Home Depot will not trade Then contact a repair shop. Your warranty started from the date you bought it. Even if it sat on HDs shelf for three years.Lincoln warranty is only one year and 90 days on the miggun. For this model welder.
Reply:i just mearsured it. and got 8 inches in 6 seconds. that was on max settings

Reply:Might your drive wheels be slipping? If you are using fluxcore wire, try the wheels with the knurled grooves for the wire. Better grip.Make sure the brake is loose. It should only be tightened "just enough" to prevent freewheeling (unspooling the spool). On my Lincoln (used), before I fixed it up, the brake "adjuster" tended to self-tighten as wire was pulled from the spool which created more and more drag for the drive wheels to work against. Not good.Last edited by wirehead; 01-31-2012 at 01:35 PM.XMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:so i took the drive rolls off and watched the speed of the shaft. it was very slow and did not keep a constant rate of speed. i talked to a lincoln service center and they said it was prob a bad cpu or somethin like that. i called home depot and the said they would not pay shipping for me to return it, but when i called latter they said they would. so i am getting it shipped back! what a hassle. so the next Q is what welder should i get now. any recomendations for under $300ish. the one i am returning is out of stock! $#*t also i got the lady to give me $26 for the hassle "yeah"
