Wire wheels for grinder

At welding class we have an industrial heavy duty 10" grinder that has a stone on one end and a wire wheel on the other end.  Works fantastic for cleaning up a weld bead to get a clear look at weld quality.  So I thought I'd get a wire wheel for my 6" delta grinder.  I went to Lowe's and they only had fine or coarse brass wire wheels by Kobalt.  I bought the course and installed it on my grinder.  Needless to say this thing sucks.  Good thing I was wearing my welding jacket and full face mask because wire shards were flying everywhere.  Is it because its brass or because its Kobalt brand?  Can anyone recommend a higher quality wheel that's not going to behave like a pissed off porcupine?

Reply:I've yet to run a wire wheel that I don't  end up looking that way it seems, whether it's on a 4 1/2" grinder of a bench unit.I forget who I got my 6" wheel for my bench grinder from years ago. It's worn down pretty far though over the years, so it's not anywhere near as bad as it used to be. I want to say I ordered mine from MSC when they used to have a retail location not far from the house. I'm sure the quality was much higher than that found at Depot/Lowes..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:When I put on a new wire wheel, I grab a piece of scrap and hog on it a few times while standing to the side. It seems there are always some loose bristles on a new wheel. After the initial assault is over I don't get stabbed very often. Reply:Order them fro McMaster Carr.  You can get twisted for heavy material or regular.  Attached are pictures of a way to use a 4 1/2" grinder with a locking on/off switch as a bench machine. Attached Images
