Hey ForumI have a job that I got a call for.  It is a mailbox that got knocked off the post.  I did not have time to run out to the job site.  Could anyone tell me what is the most common type of metal for a mailbox post?  I am thinking diecast...however wanted to ask the forumThank you!!!  Rock on!
Reply:Meh. I'd go for a 4x4 chunk of mild steel, hah.

Reply:Your comment on diecast makes me wonder if it's one of those fancy cast mail boxes. I think most of the ones I've seen are cast alum.If we are just talking about metal posts with a standard mailbox on top, most are just mild steel of some sort..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Have them text photo.  Know before you go.  At least carry cast rods.  If Al then you are screwed of you are on site. I would expect cast if mailbox got knocked off. I attach box to cast post with 7018 and repair casting with Ni-rod. Since,  I would rather the box come off than destroy the casting.Last edited by tapwelder; 03-11-2014 at 08:57 AM.
Reply:Had ours knocked off by the city plow at least a dozen times over the years. If it looks like it's going to be a regular occurance it might not be a bad idea for them to use an easier to fix post, like 4x4x3/8 tubing which will take a pretty good hit before it bends.
Reply:This goes back to the Thread last year about Insurance Liabilities of "Non-Breakable" Mail Box Posts.I believe that one started with a Ticked Off Owner where the kids kept wrecking it?Anyways in this Post, the OP asked what are store bought posts made from? The post on my neighbors is a light weight steel tubing, the part that holds the mailbox is a casting.(his is always broke)

Reply:f you’re mounting a curbside mailbox on a post near the street, the support should be secure and safe. The best supports are designed to bend or fall away if a car hits them. The Federal Highway Administration recommends…A wooden mailbox support no bigger than 4” x 4"A 2”-diameter standard steel or aluminum pipeBury your post no more than 24” deep, so it can give way in an accident.Don’t use potentially dangerous supports, such as...Heavy metal pipesConcrete postsFarm equipment, such as milk cans filled with concreteIn areas with lots of snow, we suggest a semi-arch or extended arm-type support. That way, snowplows will be able to sweep under without knocking it down.https://www.usps.com/manage/know-mailbox-guidelines.htmThe Post Office does regulate installation of the mailbox so that it is easier on the carriers. They can refuse to deliver mail if the height and set back are not correct but they have no say on how it is mounted in the ground. The Highway Administration also does not have any enforcement powers- they only suggest guidelines so that in case of an accident the Post will bend or break off without causing injury to the vehicles occupants.Last edited by Broccoli1; 03-11-2014 at 05:05 PM.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Why not just keep it simple?  Get a 2 or 3 inch piece go galvanized fence post from hardware store.  Cut to size and pound it into the ground about 3 feet.  Weld a platform on top and affix the mailbox.  No drilling requird. Yer done. It's just a mailbox, not a super structure for cryn out loud. "Hey I didn't come to look and learn, I came to turn and burn....
