was looking on ebay at some tig welders, I would love to get a inverter style welder but my pockets aren't that deep right now. I came across a Hobart tig mate, do you all think its a pretty good welder the guy on ebay is describing  it as a like the miller econo tig. Just looking for something to get started on and do some practice on which is capable of doing aluminum. Will   Supports Autism Awareness                            My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .
Reply:How much does he want? It's a nice machine, but limited in many ways. If the price was right, I'd go for it, but I wouldn't pay more than maybe $500 or so. If you look you can find very nice Syncrowave 180's and 200's down as low as $800-1000 right now. A lot more tig with a bunch more options than the Tig mate has. Power use will be about the same, even if the units are slightly bigger. Also there are often a bunch of better industrial tigs out there for sale like Zaps Miller 330AB/P for around $500-800. They are big and heavy and want a lot of power, but you will have an awesome AC/DC stick /tig that will be tough to out grow and will run circles around the Hobart as far as output. The cost to run one in the home hobbyist use situation isn't as bad as many think. It won't use more than maybe 20-30% more power in the range that Hobart would run, and probably not more than twice the power if you cranked it up to 300 amps or so ( I doubt you'd ever have the need to do so).No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:The Tig Mate and Econotig are identical.  The Miller has been replaced with the diversions don't know if Hobart is going to follow suit or not.  It is a small unit capable of around 1/8 tp 3/16ths and has not other real adjustments.  It is a solid transformer unnit though.  If the price is right then it would be worth looking at.  Geberally around 50% of the new price with a lot of accessories like collets, tungs, cups, gas lenses, gloves, hoods, and bottles if you can get as much of that in the deal for around 700-750 you would be doing pretty darn good at that price.  Thats what I would offer it I was in the market to buy a small tig machine.  Good luck and hope this helps you decide.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
