How do you get tig welds to look this clean and have the heat effect? I know its not stainless, but I'm guessing it must be cold rolled not hot rolled. Attached Images
Reply:Practice. My guess is if you actually get a closer look you'll see these aren't as "nice" as you might think. I've seen a lot of guys here who have a much more consistent feed than what I see here. Zap's work comes to mind 1st off..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:DSW has it dead nuts.  Look at the gap in the weld on the inside of the left ear and the uneven bead shape on the bottom piece running from left to righ.  I hope they arent marketing that as a high performance part or at least have really good liability insurance.  Just a quick look.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:I would like to know how the holes got heat discolored....And don't tell me by drilling......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:probably spacers welded on the other side.  this part got way too hot during welding.
Reply:Originally Posted by CEPLooks like there might be a washer welded on the other side, don't those holes look a little thicker?
Reply:Well..Could be..I dunno...Now we will just have to see the other side now don't we.......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Piece is just what they call Laser grade steel with minimal mill scale so it dosent screw up the lenses on the laser.   Parts are cut with a laser an nested for fabrication purposes. The eyes are padded out with washers of some sort on the ends for spacers, you can see the difference in thicknesses of the holes. I wouldn't call the welding consistent, and it looks like it was also overheated during the welding process, obviously a TIG weld.   Looks like some wort of motor mount.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I think the holes look deeper because there is a slight chamfer on the holes.Leo
Reply:Looks like a boss was welded on those holes, maybe just a washer for thickness to save having to mill a thicker piece. The welds are just meh on a scale of one to awesome. Two turn tables and a microphone.

Reply:I love how everyone can tell how crappy these were built by a pic on the internet, considering nobody has ever seen them or read any testimonials on them. I realize we all strive to be the best welders but just because something isn't 'text' book doesn't mean it isn't a good weld.  If the weld has full penetration does it structurally matter if one part is a 1/16 wider than another part?As for the void for all anybody knows its just lighting or the angle of the picture that makes it look like a section wasn't welded, and the comment on heat, if the part hasn't warped and it isn't under cut does heat input really matter?Last edited by claymans13; 01-31-2012 at 05:01 PM.ESAB MigMaster 275Miller Econotwin HFMiller Syncrowave 250

Reply:Hopefully their getting paid for all that time it took to tig weld that whole thing. I would mig weld something like that.

Reply:The welds may be too hot, but that just goes to show that the offroad fab world still subscribes to the "build it beefy" school of design rather than the "engineer it to perform at a low weight" thought process. The SFR/Currie Wrangler just won its class at KOH and I'm guessing it has those motor mounts in it.

Reply:I think the welds are a good job.  I do not think its too hot the beads are not grey.  The small plate would get hot pretty fast if both sides were welded  consecutively.  I would like to have gone around the ends and have the start stop in the straight parts. If the off roaders want to pay extra for tig welded parts, come on over!DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Originally Posted by ZTFabThe off-road "rock-crawling" world subscribes to that theory. The off-road Desert racing world does not.
Reply:Originally Posted by alaskanI'm not too sure about that.  I guess KOH is something like a hybrid of the two, but I still see plenty of designs on desert stuff that has nothing to do with good material science or real stress analysis.
Reply:Tiny welds when compared to the material thickness!
