First let me say that I an NOT a machinist and not much of a welder anymore due to shaky hands. The welding on the rest was done before the shakes got so bad I gave up. I haven't struck an arc in over two years. As some will remember I play with guns and do quite a bit of shooting from a bench. I built an all steel front rest a few years ago complete with a windage top but was never really happy with using a front sandbag. I decided to build a new top earlier this year that would give a secure grip on the rifle's fore end. The rest was originally designed to be heavy for stability and it was at 17 1/2 pounds. I elected to use aluminum for the new top since there were going to be a BUNCH of holes to drill and tap. Finished weight is 16 pounds 6 ounces and I can't tell any difference in stability but the rifle is much steadier when everything on the top is clamped down. Wiggles are pretty much eliminated. I also re-designed and made new leveling legs and did away with the locking nuts on the old legs since they proved to be unnecessary with the weight of the rest and added leveling vials. It also got a carrying handle. The other side.
Reply:Nice..... From the design I'd guess your shooting a Barrett.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:Very nice! I'd love to have something like that for batch testing ammo in my Anschutz.
