hi. first post on the forum. im getting ready to weld in some patch panels on my 55 f-100 and someone said i should tig them with silicon bronze. i would love to use my tig welder rather than my mig. anyone have any experience with this? i was thinking .040 tung and 1/16 silicon bronze filler at low amps. thanks guys.

Reply:Have used sil bronze lots.Body panels use 1/16" tung  .040" would probably get it done also.  Use .045" sil bronze  1/16" is a little big,and braze, parent metal is not molten about 30 to 40 amp at most with foot pedal try some scrap to get your settings correct.Sil bronze can be painted or  plated no problems.Take your time to help control warping. I use a dynasty 200dx.V
Reply:is there any advantage doing this over mig welding it? i would assume the grinding would be almost nothing. also should i buy the silicon bronze filler rods or just buy a roll of silicon bronze feed wire and tig with that?
Reply:i like tigging with silicon bronze very much..but it doesnt seem to wick via cappilary action at all for me..i dont get it flowing before the puddle as others have said..i have to get a puddle first and feed it..i never understood how the steel and bronze mix in the puddle but they do..it makes a nice bead for artsy stuff, i think half the strength of  comparable er70 tig weld..i only have tried ot on thicker stuff, not gauge metal..
Reply:thanks guys. im gonna go pick a pound of it up from the store tmrw. its $13 a pound vs $2 a pound of er70s2
Reply:Another nice bonus to sillybronz is that it's Very easy to grind.  I actually use a red or brown scotchbrite disk for final grinding.  Just be careful not to overheat the metal.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:my local welding supply only has 1/16 sillicon bronze. any tips where to find some smaller stuff?
Reply:maybe its made  as wire on a roll for a mig machine..?

Reply:I wouldn't want to do patch panels with it because of the galvanic reaction between the two metals.  If you do do it, make sure its sealed up front and backMiller 250x & Lincoln V205-TSmith Oxy-Prop torch
Reply:I've restored quite a few 1948-52 ford trucks and i prefer to use silicon bronze filler rod for body patches and when shaving body parts. it grinds nicely and flows fast and smooth. just be careful with tig welding body panels, the heat builds up very fast and you can wind up with some wavy panels
