What would you do? Im upset about this because this was my kids and my family out there with this crap on the road. This is the type of stuff I wish would stop but as long as companies are ran by bean counters instead of owners that care about what goes on in their company I feel this will never end. Here is the problem. When ¼ steel fails what do you do? Answer for some dumbass, replace it with 1/8th inch steel just to get it out of the shop and let someone deal with it later. Remember your family was out there on the same road as this morons decision to speed this out of the shop! I love my job but the company I work for is willing to cut every corner they can and the more people I talk to the more I am concerned about the well being of the people traveling on the roads with the equipment that is repaired in their facilities. I have seen many repairs that shouldnt be on the road and I cant hold back because this will only end in a disaster that I cant live with. I can tell you when I get done with a job, I dont do it as good as the job paid but I do it as good as my name is!!!! Reply:I fabricated a new airbag suspension cross member for the trailer and I know it is done right because I found the original problem. Everything under the axel was loose and needed to be replaced. This is the new parts going under the trailer. Reply:I have recently made several trips to a local DOT scalehouse to make repairs on various car haulers and trailers and to be honest, I've seen this kind of repair done on a couple of them..... one weld on the pressure tank for the brakes on a trailer looked like someone gobbed up a pile of bubble gum and slapped it on there..... rediculous.....Once you start working on it, it's amazing what you will find is on the roads today. And I almost walked away from a job for an owner/operator that asked me to jurry rig something so he could get back on the road...... I told the guy, point blank, that I wasn't touching his truck till he prepaid for the 'proper' repair or I wasn't touching it and I was leaving.....There is no way I'd put my name on something like that and risk losing my business because some bean counter, or cheapskate wants to save a buck.....And they'd be the first ones to run and get a lawyer to sue you if something happened because you were the last one to touch it.Just like the captain of the ship is responsible for everything that happens to that ship at sea...... you are fully responsible for everything that happens with that weld and design for many days, weeks months and potentially years after it's long been done.............. and frankly, I like to sleep at night. And whoever cleared that repair for the road needs to be fired and go back to engineering and welding in school, or find another trade. That's just rediculous.__________________________________________________ ______Rick The WelderMobile Welding & Fabrication - Newark, Delawarehttp://www.RickTheWelder.com

Reply:If you think that's bad...think about the trucks that are (are supposed to be) coming out of Mexico on the "new" interstate, and on up thru the USA!! Yeah...take care of those trade dollars.

Reply:Sad to say i think the Mexican trucks are safer. They get more scrutiny at every level and the Mexican drivers actually take PRIDE in being a truck driver and maintaining equipment. If you ever been in, around, or under a car hauler even a new one I dont know how the hell they stay together long enough to make the first drop let alone several hundred thousand miles.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:I don't know a ton about trailer building, but I do know is it is far more profitable to repair trailers, than it is to build them. Also I know a story where the lawyers came to my friends company and wanted to know who welded a strap winch on a trailer that was done ten years prior to a fatal accident. Here is the thing...If you do something you know is wrong not only do you get to live with it if someone dies, but lawyers can and will come after you personally. Also very nice job on the repair! You can tell that you care about your work."If you live in Sacramento you have seen my work."

Reply:I walked away, they prolly paid the original company who did this awesomeness to fix there mess, needless to say i see it on a weekly basis sometimes. Attached ImagesI forgot how to change this.
Reply:Here in Texas it is once a year. Also we have every law enforcement agency around Houston with a DOT enforcemant branch and this stuff is still out there. We have so many trucks in and out of the area they will never put a dent in it.You are right. I have turned down work before because I new it wouldn't work. There is a lawyer on every corner waiting for something to go wrong with a big truck. |
