Trying to repair a grill grate for a buddy, but the frame is made of stainless.  Have a Miller Maxstar but was curious what I need as far as a welding rod.  Any chance 6011 will get the job done?  Or do I need a stainless specific?
Reply:You want stainless wire and the right gas. I'm sorry, but helping your buddy may well cost you a pile of shekels this time tooling up to weld stainless.
Reply:Not sure how to run wire and gas to my stick welder?
Reply:He might have been thinking you were set up to do tig with that machine. That was going to be my 1st question..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:since its not a race car or a steam boiler try some 7018..
Reply:NO 6011, no 7018. you use 309 for carbon to stainless, or 308 stainless to stainless, there are other higher grades of stainless, but i wont get into them.
Reply:309L is the rod your looking for.
Reply:You do NOT have to use 309 lol. It's a freakin grill... If the expanded metal is mild then just use mild rod. If it's all stainless then use stainless.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:One has to ask, what is the cause of the need to repair it?  Is it due to obvious corrosion-related failure? Is the expanded metal stainless as well? Stainless or not, I think you'd be wise to go to a welding supply store and buy a small package of 309L stainless electrodes. 1/16" preferably, that'll help with not completely melting the expanded metal away.
