My 4X5 table (3/8") has about a 3/16" high spot. It does not run the whole width of the top, but about 2/3rd of it. The bottom has some channel tacked to it. Here is my plan:1.Remove the channel in the offending area2. Drill and tap a series of holes along the length of the high spot3. Place a piece of 1/2" 4X4" angle (or maybe a piece of 1/2" thick channel) under the table up against the bottom of the angle frame. This piece will have holes drilled in it to match the holes in the top (only bigger and not tapped)4.Install a row of Grade 8 bolts up into the table from the underside, apply heat and gradually tighten the bolts till straight.5. Grind off the excess bolts. Will this work?Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:Sure that will work, but that is a lot of work for a simple task. I'm lazy, I'd use a torch.  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I'm afraid it I just use a torch I won't be able to control the expansion/contraction and I might end up with a worse condition. The high spot is like a wave, it is about 32 inches long and probably 4 to 6 inches wideMiller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:OK students lets pull out our Procedure Handbooks and turn to page 3.1-1. Read to page 3.1-19. Note this picture at the bottom left corner of page 3.1-17. This is not voodoo. Reply:I don't weld table tops to the frame; I drill 'em, tap 'em, and bolt 'em from underneath. This is why. A few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:Thanks Samm,  I have a couple of pieces of 4" angle 1/2" thick I could use. In fact I did use them, firmly clamped across the top when I tacked the underside. Not sure if I really caused the bulge, the steel was scrap and the guy at the scrap yard cut mine from a bigger piece with a torch. I really didn't check it that well, just in a rush to get a table to work on. It was covered with rust which took many days of belt sanding, and it is still pitted in areas. In retrospect I would have been way better off just getting a new, laser cut piece of 1/2". I'll try working this one, not much to lose now. I may buy a new piece, my biggest issue will be what to do with the old top!I don't know much about a strongback, googling brings up a lot of strongbacks used for boat building. If you had a picture that would be great.ThanksLast edited by bigb; 03-25-2014 at 12:16 AM.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
