Im attempting to build a fast travel hydraulic winch for a piece of equipment. I need a line speed of about 100' a minute and a lifting capacity of 1500lbs I have a 30 gpm hydraulic circuit to tie into. everything factory I have looked at is in the 3 to 8 grand price range. another rig I have has a home built winch thats just a drum and hydraulic motor, that works but bleeds off way to fast for new helpers. so any advice on how to build a system that has auto braking would be great help I was wondering about using a small single action cylinder and a spring loaded brake band on the drum that locks when the fluid isnt flowing. but figured that asking here wouldnt hurt. someone almost always has an idea that would work easier.Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
Reply:what about a centripetal weight brake, like you find on old steam engines that prevent them from over revving? it would limit the speed at which the line can spool outThere are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:with the speed and weights your lifting and the word hired help.   I dont think this is something you want to go cheep on.    Other than the words "due diligence" and "liability"  i dont have much advice.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:thats a great idea for another project Im dealing with, too high of line speed on a mechanical brake and a rats nest results, hey the help doesnt buy the cable and gets paid by the hour to fix it, maybe I need to start confiscating bonus checks. On this one Im dealing with the hydraulic motor bleeding off after I let go of the lever, I know a system shouldnt leak but this rig is older than I am and just a 9 lever 50 GPM valve bank is a big retrofit. and we trying to make do with what we have.Last edited by idacal; 10-10-2012 at 02:30 AM.Do not argue with an idiot. Reply:dualie I know your right but all they can take is everything I own and give me free room and board. Im trying to figure out something that will work, be safer than what we are using now and still save money. Im also the one running it at times so i dont want to watch my  help, or brothers, or me get hurt.Last edited by idacal; 10-10-2012 at 02:40 AM.Do not argue with an idiot. Reply:It seems a load holding or counterbalance valve might be what you need. Read up on them here: http://hydraulicspneumatics.com/othe...educing-valvesHere's the short version:"A counterbalance valve keeps an actuator from running away regardless of flow changes because it responds to pressure signals, not flow."Have fun,JasonXMT 350 MPA Dynasty 280DXSuitcase 8RC / OptimaSpoolmatic 30AThermco Ar / C02 mixerAssorted O/A gear
Reply:If you are lifting with the winch a counter balance valve and a spring applied hydraulicily released brake is the way to go. The counterbalance valve controls the load while lowering the brake holds it when not moving.
Reply:I'd use the counter balance valve (also known as over-center valve) and pilot operated check for the "brake" to keep the installation simple and limited to hydraulic rather than mechanical components.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:The downfall of using a po check for load holding is the motor will have internal leakage and the load will drift. Mico and Ausco make brakes that will mount on the motor pilot and shaft. Will need a shuttle valve to supply the signal to release the brake.
Reply:I've had great luck with MileMarker winches. I had a hydraulic unit on my '05 diesel truck, I ran off power steering and eventually a PTO pump. They can be had relatively cheaply, as they're on every hmmv (from what I understand). They have some sort of provision for a brake as I've never had any experience with it unspooling under load, even pulling my 10k truck up a large hill, or looping it over a bar in a barn to lift engines out..Miller: 200dx, Bobcat 225, Passport, Powermax 45, Milwaukee: Dry Saw, MagDrill, grinders
