The title says it all really.  Anything I should do to prepare for the course and exam?  I don't want to over study the wrong things.
Reply:I am interested in the answers to this, though I suppose it will vary depending on what your area of focus will be. I asked about it awhile back and got some good general. It seems the course is meant to be a review, and it takes around six months study before the test to be ready. When your done if you want to sell your books let me know, I'd like to study before plunking down the cash for the class.
Reply:What code? When?
Reply:AWS D1.1 October 6-13 I don't have 6 months to study,  but I have my one year degree.  And a few weeks right now if someone can point me in the right direction,  or give some general advice.
Reply:I wouldn't worry too much about it. I didn't study at all before the seminar (I didn't have any code books) and I passed first time. I took the AWS D1.1 class. During the week of class I studied my butt off. I took the class out of town so I wouldn't be distracted by family, work, etc...
Reply:I chose to go with API 1104 since it is only 70 plus pages vs the D1.1 book. Though my work at the time as a weld involved more of the D1.1 code I felt it couldn't hurt to learn something new. If you stayed up with your general knowledge of all common welding process you should do fine on the general knowledge portion of the test, but have a somewhat current school book on welding would help. The general consensus is that the practical portion is the most difficult so when taking the course pay close attention to that part of the class.
Reply:yeah have 10 years in actual welding experience. Then become a cwi...~1987 Lincoln Sa-200~~1978 Miller Big 40~ (restored) ~and everything inbetween~

Reply:AWS requires you to have 5 years in the field, it doesn't say it has to be actual welding, though. There are a lot of inspectors that never struck an arc, most aren't very good inspectors, in my experience. I had a guy in Pascagoula at Chevron wanted me to cut into a chrome-moly root to fix a piece of silicone sitting on the inside of the root. I blew up on him and called the Bechtel welding engineer over to look at it and he overruled the QC. He said: "I don't know what it is you think you're seeing there..., but it looks OK to me."Sounds to me like No1up has enough welding experience to be alright.I used to be a CWI, I had an inspector give me a disc that had one of the inspection books on it. It had mock up tests on it, I studied that for about 4 months in my spare time after work before I took the test and I passed the first time without the seminar, but it it a pretty tough test. You might want to familiarize yourself beforehand with the various tools that you'll have to use on the practical; undercut gauges, calipers and micrometers and such, practice using them to measure pinholes. You'll have to measure a number of pinholes in a weld and add them up to see if they still are acceptable under the code. You might also want to look on the internet for a site where you can learn welding symbols, you need to have them down cold.Last edited by TimmyTIG; 09-15-2013 at 04:15 PM.
Reply:I had a blue print reading class in my welding education. I'm not sure how "ready" it got me, but I'm going over as much as possible. I have all the books they use in the test, so I'm going over the code clinic book and moving on to the next book.

Reply:It's definitely a tough test. I used up every bit of the allotted time on the practical portion. Didn't help that they gave me an undercut gauge that went past zero and I was trying to compensate for that for a while before I finally gave up and went got a different one.
Reply:I just say your post for the first time today and as I was reading them I said to myself, "he is going to do fine on the test, I should leave a comment and encourage No1up".  Then I saw your post from today that you past.  Guess I was right!  Congratulations and your right it is a hard test! Some kind of Big Blue constant current welding machineAnother smaller yet, Blue machine (it's got wire in it)
Reply:Congrats N1U!  Another free source of study in prep for the CWI are these handy drills at http://www.flashcardmachine.com/flas...pic_id=1676601.  Even a cool app for the iPhone.  Def plan on rip'n these when the time comes!"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Thank you guys for all the kind words, and sorry for the late reply. No sooner did I pass that my employer put me to work! LOL I love it. I'll be going for my NACE II soon.
