I have a new WP-9P (was Weldcraft, now Miller) pencil TIG torch. I am trying to find out if it needs a special type of collet/collet body. Without a back cap, I can't figure how to tighten the tungsten. I have several other WP-9 torches, but the collets from those will not tighten in the 9P. Someone with knowledge please touch my head!
Reply:You tighten the tungsten from the collet body. Then install the cup. You should be able to google up a parts list.Edit: Looks like it uses the standard collet body and collet. You will have to shorten your tungstens. http://www.bakersgas.com/media/produ...Parts-WP-9.pdfLast edited by shovelon; 04-05-2014 at 11:39 AM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Yup, tightening down the collet body applies the same kind of longitudinal force on the collet so that it squeezes the slit-ends and grabs hold of the tungsten. Kinda like the reverse of what tightening a back cap on a regular torch does---the collet has no where forwards to go because it's against the collet body, so the slit-ends squeeze together; on the pencil torch the collet has no where to go backwards, so the same thing happens and the slit-ends squeeze together and grab hold of the tungsten. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:I tried that. Maybe my collets are worn. I'll get some new ones and try again. Thanks for the replies.Alpha TIG 200X

Reply:I have a CK pencil torch, air cooled, it works fine, gets hot pretty quick set at 90 tho.Last edited by cornemuse; 04-06-2014 at 10:49 AM.Reason: add

Reply:I weld a lot of thin wall 4130 chrome molly tubing. .035" to .065". I usually use about 35 amps max. I'm hoping the pencil will make it easier to get into the joints.Alpha TIG 200X
