I picked up some scrap 4x4-1/4" thick plate scraps the other day, got to thinking about making a dueling tree out of em for .22 caliber. Would 1/4" be thick enough to with stand the impact of a .22lr bullet if it was unjacketed an shot at a minimum of 50yards?93 Bobcat 225GMillerMatic 135HF Tig 91811
Reply:My answer depends on what side of the barrel I'm standing.  I don't think you'll pierce them, but what if you do?
Reply:I'd be more concerned about ricochet's.                                                         MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:If you are shooting lead slug .22 lr I don't think you can pierce 1/4" steel at point blank range.Test it and report back...GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:yeah that was my main concern was ricochet's but figured with the swinging motion of the target that would be somewhat eliminated. I still plan to make it so that the top of it is leaned in towards the shooter.93 Bobcat 225GMillerMatic 135HF Tig 91811

Reply:As others have mentioned, 1/4" plate is more than thick enough for .22LR.We shoot steel with centerfire handguns as close as 10 yards in IDPA.  Every now and then somebody takes a ricochet - I've had mine for sure.  As long as you're wearing safety glasses, you're OK.  I wouldn't worry about ricochets at 50 yards with .22LR at all.  I'd still wear safety glasses, but for other reasons.  In the last year I've witnessed two case head separations at close range -- I was running the timer and so had the ejection port aiming right at me.  Both the shooter and I got a blast of powder/brass from close distance each time.  It was nothing but a nuisance since I had the glasses on...
Reply:1/4" is overkill for .22lr.  I've shot thousands of rounds at a set of swinging targets made of 1/8" or 10 gauge.  Center fire hand guns will turn them into pringles.  A .223 would go clean through. If you are only using .22lr.  I would not use 1/4".  That's pretty heavy to be knocked around.  If the bullet can't move the plate, the chance of a ricochet goes way up.  The plate needs to move to absorb the energy. My name's not Jim....
Reply:Shot .30-06 and .223 at 1/4". Held up fine Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk"I fully know my place in life, and it's behind a welding helmet...." - Jesse JamesIG: @weldakota
Reply:Thanks for all of the feed back guys, I'm still in the planning process of this project. Only thing that I have built as of right now is the base of the target. Gonna post it up in the project section once I get a chance.93 Bobcat 225GMillerMatic 135HF Tig 91811
Reply:Holy Cow!I know we are all welding nerds here, but isn't anybody gonna say something about this guy's shooting?I am ex law enforcement(don't ask), better than most at the range, and on a very good day I never could have shot like that. When I was shooting, the 5X stayed in the same place....back to welding

Reply:Looking at the video and the targets themselves plus the hinge plates,,,,,, looks like the perfect job for some one with a CNC plasma to me. At least worth getting a quote. Maybe make your own template and take it in."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

You mean that the bullets held up fine while going through the steel.  2. You were shooting from a looooooong ways away.  3. You were shooting the new pre-fragmented 'tactical' ammo that's popular for urban defense 'cuz it doesn't penetrate well.  4. You were shooting reloads with pistol powder, moving about 1200 fps.  We call them squirrel loads around here.5. You weren't shooting at reg'lar old hot-rolled steel.  Although I'm not even sure I know of a type of 1/4" steel that would stand up to a close-range .30-06 hit.6. You had the barrels of your rifles shortened to about 4" long.7. You were completely missing the steel.8. You were actually fast asleep in bed, dreaming the whole thing.
Reply:When the surface becomes pockmarked, then the fragments can scatter back toward the shooter.   50 yards for .22 should be okay, just don't try it closer with a dinged up target.
