Hey guys, Im Practicing for a 6g pipe test thats coming up. i will be tested in 2" sch 80 pipe. However, i only have 2" sched 40 pipe to practice on.Because I'm using sch 40 pipe instead of sch 80, I decided to use 3/32 6010 for the root instead of the 1/8 rod to prevent from overheating the pipe. This is the problem i'm having.... I first weld from 6 o'clock to 9 no problem ..then 6 o'clock to 3 it starts to get hot and I end up fighting to close up the keyhole, then from 3 o'clock - 12 and 9 o'clock - 12 is where it gets really hot and I Struggle.INVERTEC® V275-S Lincoln STICK WELDER is set to about 55 amps and the variable arc force is set at 0. Pipe has a 3/32 landing and 3/32 gap. I'm thinking i should close my gap on the pipe?? any suggestions? Am i wrong to think i shouldnt use 1/8 rod on sch 40?? please help thank you!!
Reply:I use 1/8 rod. 3/32 is too small for me. I always weld the section that has the closest gap first. The pipe will pull together as it is being welded. Reply:With pipe that small going from sched 80-40 for practice is a huge difference. It takes the heat totally different. I got certified on 2" XXS than went to test for a contractor on 2" sched 80 even after practicing that was a hard *** test. Hardest I've had to take so far on carbon steel. I would go with 1/8 rod more metal going in will allow you to move faster and put less heat into the pipe. Let it cool for a couple minutes before you put the hot and cap in so you don't blow through.
Reply:OK... Whatever rod and heat... Fine... what ever YOUR comfortable with.... What I read your "doing" is what I will give you a tip about...You say 6 - 12..... I say no....What I do... on the comfortable side of your vertical...OVER REACH 6 o'clock... 7 or 8....Don't over reach so far that your going down hill... But you have wiggle room....Then on the side your not as comfortable on.... You'll be at a better position to pick it up..... Hey.... Worth what'cha paid for it..... Gotta Fly.....PS I agree with CEP... use the bigger rod.If your getting too hot... WAIT !!!!Actually you should have a 600 degree temp stick...The pipe needs to be UNDER that before you put in another pass....Or your inspector isn't worth a dam......Last edited by planecrazzzy; 04-06-2014 at 12:00 PM.Sometimes you just have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down...
