Ive read through any thread I could find about prescription glasses and no one mentioned transition lenses. My current set of glasses has the transitions lenses and ill be starting my classes Tuesday (a week before my new prescription safety glasses show up). I was wondering if these lenses will effect my ability to see under a hood?
Reply:I have transition lenses, I can not weld with them on. I use dollar store reading glasses with side shields. Take a tape measure, measure the distance from your eyes to where you are comfortable holding your hands while welding. Go to the dollar store to the glasses rack, grab something with small print, hold it out at the same distance. Find a pair of glasses that make it perfectly clear to read small print at that distance, and you're good to go! Reply:Personally, I'd get a pair of glasses that had just your close up prescription in them.  That's what I had to end up doing.  Didn't like the two sets of prescriptions in mine and finally just got a pair with the bifocal prescription in the whole lens.  However, that's just me.  Try out what you have and see if you can live with it.
Reply:your best bet if the reading glasses don't work for you is to get a prescription  for computer glasses at the distance you need.miller thunderbolt 250vlincoln square wave tig 175 prolincoln idealarc mig sp250everlast tig 210EXTeverlast power plasma 50chicago electric (hf) 130 tig/90 arcchicago electric 90 amp flux wire3 sets oxy/acet

Reply:I have transitions, and havent noticed any change in my actual lens tint. With an AD helmet
Reply:Cool. I will give it a shot. Im nearsighted as hell ( past about 10" is blurry. I know the lenses are UV reactive as they refuse to darken in a car. Thats the part im worried about mainly is them going dark.
Reply:Because the prescription at the top of the lens in transition lenses is for distance, it makes it really difficult to see what you're doing if you have to weld overhead. Even if you are not welding overhead, sometimes you have your head and helmet jammed in such a tight spot in such a way that the only way you can see your arc is by looking through the top of your lens.  Again, it's really hard to see what you're doing when you are looking through the distance part of your lens.  Sometimes you can look over top of your glasses if you are close enough, but sometimes you are just far enough away that you can't see without a lens. CEP has the best idea. Dollar store reading glasses with the correct magnification for the distance you are working from.
Reply:i think there is a terminology issue here. I think some are confusing progressive lenses where the prescription changes from distant to reading grinds with "photo grays", where the lenses darken due to brighter light. My photo grays darken even in the car, or due to a flash in a pict. I can't get my picture taken for my DL because the lenses look like I'm wearing sun glasses even though they don't look all that dark in person. I do find they darken up somewhat when welding, especially in bright light conditions like outside in direct sun. I usually have to adjust my AD hood to compensate a bit for this. That or I need to cover my head to block out extra light. Down side to that is when I'm flipping back and forth between fit up and welding the lenses still take a while to adjust so I still have to adjust the hood darkness. As mentioned I have a special prescription for welding a close work like reading a tape. I had my eye doc set it up so I can still drive with them if need be. Mine could be set to focus a bit closer than they are currently. I'm beginning to find myself again occasionally looking over my glasses to see better when I weld as I'm near sighted..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I wear 3 way progressive glasses and they are transitions also and the only problem I have is welding something where I have to look up to see it...In those cases I have to turn my glasses upside down to see what the hell I am doing......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I wish I could use cheaters, but being partially blind in one eye. The line down the center of the cheaters drives me crazy. After cataract surgery, the cheap reading glasses work great! They are a pain to take off all the time and use my regular glasses after welding. Reply:I agree with cheater lenses... Get a couple "Powers"and just wear regular safety glasses..Gotta Fly...PS  1.75 is a good place to start...  They are about $6 bucks... They fit in my Huntsman , my Jackson shadow , things need mod.Well...  Not the Hood...  The EQC pack...  ( Elec quick change ).Sometimes you just have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down...
Reply:They make glasses with the bi focal on top and bottom...I tried a pair...  but back then... I wasn't used to bi focal.. and the regular vision in the middle was too small...it was hard to see REGULAR...  I kept locking into the bi focal parts.....Gotta Fly.... Reply:If you use an old set of frames for your welding glasses the lens's end up costing about $50. Get a set for computer work distance and they are just right for welding.

Reply:Just Stink'n...  You know...They have those "Stick on" bi focals...They could be put on upside down...  in other words...At the TOP of the lenses...  Then , as yer welding and looking up...Yer in the focus area..... Just a thought to some of the guys that mentioned looking up..... Gotta Fly.....I just keep my eyes closed.....Sometimes you just have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down...I gave up today and took the cheater out of my hood. I use 2x glasses from Walmart for normal use and a 2x cheater in my helmet. I was tacking on a bunch of weld o lets and could not see the bubble in my level with my hood up. I tried my glasses under the hood and got along fine. Now I need to get a set of 2x safety glasses. Dan
Reply:Walmart. I got safety glasses in my prescription for $40 - $50 bucks a pair. I have 4 pair MillerMatic 252Miller Xtreme 625Miller Digital Elite
Reply:Those that do a lot of overhead work may want to look into "Double-D"  lens.   Besides, who wouldn't want to get their hands on a pair of Double Ds...
