Was at the powdercoater and saw a custom rear-end built for a dragster. I knew the guy who built it and was asking the powdercoat guy about it. He said that rod for it cost him over $1000 a pound! I didn't know rod was that expensive. I asked him what kind it was he didn't know. So, what rod costs that much or is he being sarcastic?.... I was thinking titanium rod of some sort but even then that seems a little high....Miller Dynasty 200Millermatic 211Instagram?.... find me @ WELD_MEDIC

Reply:Most automotive chassis and suspension stuff is 1018 mild and/or 4130 chromoly- both of which are welded with ER70S-2. So, I'd be willing to bet the powdercoat guy simply didn't know what he was talking about."There are two types of people in America - those who try to classify everyone into two types and those who don't."

Reply:We used to weld our 4130 race car with 3/32 LH-70 stick in the 70's . No tig or mig yet SAE-400 welder .
Reply:Must be Adamantium. Rods aside, I'd hate to see the price tag on the MACHINE you'd need to weld an un-meltable metal.
Reply:Originally Posted by tig_21I would say so too. Makes me wonder, what is the most expensive metal to tig weld? Titanium, inconel, etc...?
Reply:I've bought spools of 625 Ni alloy fluxcore wires that cost $40-$50 per pound for a 33lb spool. That's $1300-$1600 per spool.I wind what's in the gun back on to the spool when I'm done, and I cut the tip of the wire as short as my conscience will allow between welds.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:I had salesman try to sell me "special" rod to replace regular 7018 for over 6 dollars a pound when 7018 was running a dollar a pound. There is a sucker born every minute.

Reply:I wouldn't be so quick to jump off the deep end here.Friend of mine (John Kaiser, Nassau Tool and Die) used to weld the titanium landing gears for the F-15's. You wouldn't believe the steps (including inspections) they go thru. I wouldn't be surprised if the filler (certified content, tracked from raw material to final rolling, storage, shipping etc all tracked) wouldn't go for $1,000/#.Even at that, the filler would represent a very small portion of the cost of the assembly. As a sidenote. John told me back then (about 1992) that his shop was one of only two in the world that had the capability to rework the 16' gun barrels on the battleships. Also did some "spook" sniper rifle barrels.
