been thinking about building a wood stove for my shop. I'm sure some of you guys have built them before. what thickness would anyone suggest for the walls and top? i was thinking 1/4''. was figuring on 1/2'' for the doors. any ideas? my idea is soothing like a fisher or something along those lines.
Reply:You need to talk to your insurance agent. Most codes and insurance do not let you have wood stove in shop. Too much risk of burning. You don't want to find it out after the fact.(fire that is)

Reply:Old shop had a wood stove in it , insurance didn't seem to mind. Appreciate the heads up though...The old fab shop i worked in when i was in college had 3 massive wood stoves in it. Being low man on the pole i fed plenty of wood in those things! Anyhow...seems like there was a guy on here who had some wood stove build posts on here i forget who it was? I meant forge!
Reply:With the exception of the floor and doors, I'd go with 14ga - 10ga hot roll. The sides and top will heat up much quicker, it's cheaper and easier to build... provided you have a metal brake. Doors and floors: 1/4"DannyMy SiteJust worrying 'bout what I can't get to today.
Reply:My shop insurance would be an extra $50 per year for for a FACTORY built, UL listed stove. ANY homemade heating devices would have to be 25' away from the structure and ducted into the building. I decided to go with a propane heater, wood heat does not fit my schedule. Wish it did, but by the time it was warmed up after me going to the shop after my day job, it was time to quit for the night. My heat source needed to be instant on and off so I didn't have to worry about it.
Reply:Rancher76, $50/year in insurance cost is easily paid for in fuel savings. I heat my house with wood and my shop with oil and plan to switch that to wood before next winter. For many on this board, the day job is the shop.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A

Reply:I have an outdoor wood furnace for my home. Id definitely prefer one of those in my shop but , $$ is an issue with those. Thanks for the input from all. The !/4'' doors sound easier than the 1/2" i had planned.
Reply:I think the insurance companies would rather you refer your wood stove as a wood heater. The walls and floors dont need to be 1/4" as long as you line them with firebricks, thats what going to retain the heat. The top of my heater is 5/16 and the walls and floor are 3/16.
