No wonder people rather Tig weld the root pass! I'm kind of like lightning, I never hit the same place twice. 6-inch sch 80 pipe 5-G. 1/16-inch land, 3/32-inch gap, 30-degree bevel. 1/8-inch 6010, 70-amps, + 9.5 arc force. If you have any pictures of 6010 roots, feel free to post them here. Last picture is Tig root. Reply:I don't have any pictures on my new phone. I love 6010.. though I would much rather tig a pipe all the way out. I prefer a 1/8" land though, and about 80-85 amps. Looks pretty good. I'm assuming you don't do it every day so it wouldn't be fair to judge it that way.I've been doing tons of structural with ceramic tape at the yard, but I just got a call that said I can take the pipe test after Christmas break. 6G, 5" standard pipe. Tig root/hot pass, 11018 fill and cap. In a restricted box, no more than 12" from the wall and ceiling. Shoot. I asked if they ever use 6010 and the foreman laughed.

Reply:Pipe ?  Torch and coat hanger ! Or Bic lighter.Pipelining, to me, is a gig not unlike the guy who has the job of putting the laces in the tennis shoes at Nike. No thanks. I aint knocking them ! I can't do what they do ! I also wear cowboy boots and Croks .Laces are for pipeliners ! Gimme a vehicle and ask for a custom roof rack and I'll be a happy camper. Reply:That's one reason I quit welding, and went into rigging full time. I just couldn't take anymore of those days of running 50, 60, 70-pounds of wire a day on a production welding job. Now to repair something that was broke, or to build something from blue prints, or a napkin, I was all over that!Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:I guess just what bolts/washers you used to keep everything to work right I had a rig setup and it did ok at first but now the stopper/adjustment is walking and screwing up. If your on your phone in top right corner you hit the 3 dots then click attach picture...Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk

Reply:Here you go.What I did was grind off the little plastic threaded stud. Drill a 1/4” hole through the center of the square insert. Use a 1/4" x 20 bolt about 3/4” long. Install the washers, and a wing nut on the outside. Reply:those uphill or downhill? ripples seem to contradict my thoughts and your numbering a little bit. on a downhill root you should be a quite a bit warmer than 70 amps and you should just let the rod burn itself it looks like you are stepping your root in and there is nothing wrong with that but if you want consistency you need to let the rod burn itself with nothing more than the weight of the stinger and your lead pushing on it, almost just skating the rod along the bevels. also looks like you are possibly feathering tacks too much with your grinder. grind it flush to about the top of the land, not on the bevel leading up to the tack do not feather your key hole. that will smooth out tie in's. when you break arc on your bottom tack speed up and point the rod away from you that will make a smaller keyhole to tie into at the bottom and lessen the chance of having a suckback on the bottom
Reply:that being said those would probably all pass xray just fine. I've seen a lot worse on pipeline fab on a regular basis. Hell, i've done worse and I do it everyday.
Reply:All uphill, I'm not good enough for downhill! Yes I feather the tacks, and my starts & stops. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
