Just need some input on how strong the joints on a stainless 14g tube are if i weld with no filler rod ( no gaps). Will the weld be strong enough to not break at the joint with vibrations?

Reply:If you will be cutting tubes with coldsaw and you will backpurge when welding, weld should be strong. You need full penetration weld.

Reply:If there is a turbo on the piping I'd use filler. If it is a NA car no filler is really needed. That said, I ALWAYS use filler.
Reply:I was taught:  when doing TIG, the omission of filler rod leaves the base metal in a state that is depleted of some of the alloying elements, and the rod is manufactured with the process in mind...in other words the weld rod is not simply a piece of base material shaped like a wire to help fill in the gaps.  The downside is the fusion zone may or may not crack depending on the service loads.
Reply:We are putting together a 3 inch mandrel bentr exhaust on a 68 camaro, its non turbo, thats a good point about the filler rod
Reply:Hi yall,I make exhaust sys. for a living, welding with out filler rod is ok as long as you dont have any undercut. Take it slow and easy with the power.Pic of a 60mm, 1mm thickFor my car, aint broke yet and its been 2years or so Attached Images

Reply:European Welding,Very nice work. Do you have any clear close up shots?I have done it both ways, with and without. If you have perfect fitting joints, fusion is the way to go. Like said, if you dont trust your welds, just add filler.

Reply:Just like doing .065 sanitary piping, a good tight fit up is a must or else you are pissing up a rope.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
