I catch ALLOT of flak at work for walking the cup at work. It's not its the only way I weld, or I lean on it as a crutch, but all my fill and cover passes get walked. Anybody else look down on walking? This in the pharmacutical/food industry.
Reply:I guess it depends on where you work and what their standards are. We walk the cup whenever possible. I had a test supervisor chew me out for not walking the cup on a test I took once.

Reply:Is it me, but did the weldor in that video take a long time to weld that joint? Also the angle of the torch is not preferable to me, as shown by the blackening of the outside. I still see he is resting his rod hand on the pipe. So is the idea to prevent weldor fatigue? Beyond that I still see little benefit to cup walking.I could see some kind of attachment or guide added to the torch to do the same thing without the possibility of introducing some kind of contamination from the cup.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:I try to walk the cup when possible, once you get started I find it easier to keep the bead uniform. I find the freehand more exhausting.
Reply:On pipe there is no substitute for walking the cup. The only time I don't is if I am in a position that won't allow me to do it. I can't watch the video that was posted so i can't comment on the black weld or the speed that he was moving. You can't move too fast because you either get incomplete penetration or gas pockets. Your tungston facing forward actually helps you not get undercut and it preheats that metal ahead of where you are welding. There is a reason that damn near every pipe welder does it. Resting your rod hand on the pipe helps keep your arm from getting tired and you can feed rod more consistantly. |
