I'm working another name plate but ran out of 4" sch 40 steel pipe for the clock...... but had some 4.5 sch 40 Aluminum pipe........I decided to use that piece for the clock on my next steel name plate project......... but..... you can't weld Fe to Al......I'll be bolting everything on regarding the clock...... and so decided to try my hand at the tap and die set.....The name plate will be done next weekend.... so no pics of that yet......I had to think about how to get 4 holes lined up properly (Like the 12 and 6 o'clock, and the 3 and 9 o'clock)..... I used a speed square and soap stone on the table to get it right.....The method worked ok for me......1/8" holes in sch 40 (3/16" thick)....... not much room for error on the drilling.......Pics of my homemade machine work today.......... Reply:From the title, I thought you were working on a porn set.http://www.facebook.com/LockhartMetalArthttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Grumpy...44306259043484
Reply:Looks good. Gettin' em straight is the hard part! Might consider something like this for next time. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Starrett-and...item3ccc4ca815Just a quick search so you'd know what I'm talking about. The piece in the middle is the center finder. I have no ties to the seller. I do know what Starrett and Brown/Sharpe tools go for.................. this is a very good deal at this time, but look around some.
Reply:Marking quarters on pipe is easy with just a piece of drywall tape.
Reply:Just the "Made in USA" stamped on the ruler is worth the $20.

Reply:Looks good! I might have used a slightly different marking scheme. Measure OD of pipe, Make a square on the table using pipe OD as length of the 4 sides. Sit the pipe in the square and either mark at the 4 corners or the 4 tangent points.Either way, you got it done. Fexal, do yourself a favor and pick up a good quality combination square set. The difference between a good quality set and what is available from down at the big box store can't be described without putting your hand on 'em! The old models aren't going to be around forever at the low prices you can find them at today...a particular example is the large amount of machinist tooling (couple of Gerstner chesst full) I purchased by bits and pieces off eBay some 7-8 years back when the Rust Belt and East Coast machine shops were going down like the Titanic...a lot of the tools and tooling were as cheap as scrap steel and cost more to ship than to purchase, but those days are gone.Shot of the Gerstners...they're crammed to the gills and other cabinets hold the overflow.
Reply:I like blue layout fluid and a sharp scribe if I am laying out on the edge of pipe, gives you a nice thin crisp line exactly where you want it.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
