Does anybody do welding on turbocharger hot housings.  I have some LARGE hot housings with cracks on the inlet tongue to the turbine wheel.  I'm not sure what materials are used normally to cast the hot housing, I'm assuming its a high nickel bearing iron.  Our vendor refuses to weld the cracks because they have had issues with the weld breaking away and destroying the turbine wheel.  4 out of 4 of your turbos have cracks.  They installed stitching pins at the accessible ends of the cracks but said we should find new hot housings shortly as this is a temporary repair.  Just a shout out to see if anybody here has experience welding hot housings.  The manufacturer no longer supports this turbo and there are no housings available.  These are larger turbos, lets say 6 inch diameter compressor and turbine wheels.
Reply:Inclonel 625, hastalloy w or 309 tig rods. Your vendor is correct about welding the housing they tend to crack there is alot of expansion and contraction happen quickly on turbo housing.
Reply:Whats the application?
Reply:It really depends on the charger you have. Most are cast iron turbine housings. But not all. For instance my new turbo is in the mail as we speak and it has a cast stainless steel turbine housing that I special ordered with it. If it's rusted up its cast iron.1973 Lincoln SA 200, Already replaced shunt coils, Idle board (SOLD)1984 Miller Dialarc 250HF, Miller water cooler, 250 AMP water cooled torch, you know the worx.
