ok I am getting into classic car restoration as a hobby and im sure at some point im going to need to make repair panels. having been to the restoration show at the nec last weekend and watching the demonstrations I have been told that I should learn to gas weld for making repair sections. I am also lucky enough to have a neighbour that is willing to teach me the basics. Having looked at hobbyweld for the gas (oxygen and acetylene) the cost of the cylinder and then the gas is around 300 quid. I would then have to get the torch and all the kit. After doing some research online I have discovered one can gas weld with propane rather than acetylene.my questions are thus:-1) will I get the same quality weld/cut with propane as I would with acetylene?2) all I can gather from online is I will need diff tips is this the only difference?3) Is it easier or more difficult than acetylene to control and do4) what are the difference between propane and acetylenesorry for the long winded ramblecoop

Reply:ok acetylene is 240 bucks just for the bottle and 90 bucks for the gas oxygen is 90 bucks for the bottle and 45 bucks for the gas that's 465 bucks for something I would use very occasionally if I have to use it at all (my current car didn't need any body work) that is also not including the torch hoses regs and flash arrestors etc that I would need. I have a decent mig that belonged to my neighbour and was given it. coopps didn't realise that this was an American forum hence the prices in my first post were in pounds sterling.
Reply:At those prices I'd weld with mig, heat and cut with oxy/propane.Oxy/propane is what I use unless I just have to weld with the torch. Which is almost never.Last torch welding I did was just for teaching my son. Then he moved on to stick and tig.You can do without an acetylene bottle pretty much forever.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Acetylene is very nice to have and will last a good while if you use the right tips and set up the torch correctly.
