How to weld the parts of cranes?? What are the equipments needed for it??

Reply:Absolute necessity when working on cranes.  I prefer to use this over welders as it's a pain in the arse to haul a welder to the top of a crane.

Reply:A company I worked for had a lattice-boom 'Manitowac' (?) crane (a year younger than me, 1948). It came with manuals for making/repairing about everything about it. There were very specific instructions on replacing the 'lattices' (webbing) on the boom. Cut no closer than 1" away from frame, grind & cool, etc. till removed, make a 'perfect' fit with replacement web, weld in quadrants plus switch ends of new web when welding in new web, etc. Very, very detailed manual. It had a Caterpillar engine at least 6 ft long with a hand cranked pony motor starter with a 2 speed tranny. If you started it, you did not shut it off till quitting time, whether it was used or not. Redline speed was 1800 rpm.
Reply:What everyone is telling you, Rosebyrne, is that YOU do not weld on cranes. You call a professional welder to do the job, and you make (insert your own expletive here) well sure that he is certified, licensed, bonded, and has been trained on your type of crane.  This is not a 'Hey, I've done a little welding, I can fix that boom right up' type of job. If you or your employer thinks it is, then you both need to be required to stand directly under the next 50 loads it moves.Cranes are nothing to mess with, even your little garage engine puller type. Crane failure will, if you are lucky, only cost you a few dollars in broken parts, and broken bones if you are in the way. With bad luck, or incompetence, you kill people, and cause catastrophic damage to property that does not belong to you.The fact that you, in your first post here, ask about such a thing, is why you got the responses you did.MillerMatic 252Miller Xtreme 625Miller Digital Elite

Reply:It's really not that difficult.  First you anchor the crane with something heavy, so that it's stable, like this:Then, you lower the boom so that it readily accessible, like this:Then, break out a 110v mig and get busy.

Reply:Inexperienced welder, or inexperienced crane operator. Bad things always seem to happen when you're not qualified for the task. I was the rigging foreman who got the privilege to work with the divers to pick this 18-ton hydraulic crane out of about 120-feet of water. When it happened I was on a different radio channel, but was told latter the last thing the operator said on the radio was, "hey guys I think I'm getting light". Reply:Concrete pile is the work of the devil.Pile should be round, big bore, heavy wall, carbon steel, welded, pipe.Period. Tho I have made a few welds on concrete pile, I in no way endorse the evil that they hold. Those may fly in Seattle area, or back east, but not in the beautifull southwest : )J

Reply:Now this is a crane! Wonder what that puppy is rated for? Biggest I ever worked with was a 1,000-tons. I guess they're going to try and pick that sunken ferry in South Korea. I worked with a stiff leg crane for about a year, now the swing in these really sucks!  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:That DB General I posted a picture of earlier can pick a 1,000-tons over the working end, 750-tons full revolving. It sets on a 100-feet wide x 400-feet long barge. Surprising how small the draw works, (winches) are. This derrick here, when you walk in the engine room you would gasp at the size of the draw works! It has 3,000-ton draw works in it, but only rated at 165-tons. It runs 2-inch wire rope. The operators tell me it will pull the wire rope into with out any problem.  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
