Can I use this wire on a jet ski trailer. How do I know what ss the trailer is made out of?http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI...m=200665438108Thanks for the help.
Reply:comgle64, are you sure the trailer is made from SS? I might believe that it is more likely that it is galvanized steel. Just double check for sure before you go planning on welding it with SS wire. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:can I tell the difference by looking at it? Not really sure what it is.
Reply:that would be one very fancy trailer and expensive too! Put a magnet to it. Most ss doesnt attract a magnet.Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45! Thanks to the esposa! Finally got an O/A setup
Reply:it is magnetized so does this mean it is galvanized?
Reply:Most likely hot dipped galvinized. If it were stainless, it would probably cost as much as the jet ski riding on it. What needs welding on this trailer? The SS wire will work on carbon steel, but no sense in spending the extra $$$ when you don't need to.
Reply:Trailer was jackknifed. I need to cut out a 6in section and box it in. Any tips?
Reply:Can you take a picture of the trailer and post it here?  Im thinking that if you thought it was stainless, it is probably a shiney looking trailer.  Galvanized steel doesn't have a shiney appearance to it.  It's a very dull grey color.  Also, the pic will shed some light on what your actual problem is with the trailer and it helps us understand and give you some ideas on how to fix your trailer.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:A picture would be nice, but I guess I'll be the first to say it... If you can't tell the difference between galvanize and stainless, there is a very small likelyhood that you are competent enough to complete this repair. I'm not trying to be a dick, but  trailers go down the road where our wives and kids are...Hope I don't come off as too blunt, but it's been a long week, and I feel honesty is the best policy.

Reply:The trailer is galvanized steel. I was going to cut out the bent section and box it in with some galvanized plate. What kind of wire should I use for this?
Reply:Where on the trailer is the bent section?City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:its about 4' from the tongue.
Reply:This looks to be part of the tongue, you probably meant 4' from the coupler. I would cut out the damaged section and weld a 1/4" angle iron piece sized to cover the top and one side, and another to cover the bottom and the other side. Extend it 5" either side of the cut and weld it in all the way around each piece and weld the two pieces together where they meet up, and do it all with my stick welder 1/8" 6011. Then put a few good coats of cold galvinizing on it. For extra security a 1/2" hole could be drilled either side of the cut and a grade 8 bolts installed. While your working on the trailer might I suggest you add some uprights on each side of the trailer to add lights to. Make them high enough you can see them easily while backing the trailer to prevent this sort of thing from happening again. I believe this was the original problem that started this. You couldn't see the trailer, and jack knifed it before you realized it. Sometimes it's best to lower the tailgate to get a better view of what's going on back there. If you can't see it over the tailgate, then the uprights are a good idea to have so you can see if the trailer is level while towing. If a tire goes flat you can see the uprights are not level and stop to check/replace it. You never mentioned what kind of welder you have to try to accomplish this repair with. Please don't say it is a 120Vac  Mig.Last edited by Bistineau; 04-24-2012 at 05:03 PM.
Reply:So you've had the lincoln 140 for a little over a year now, and you want to cut in half, and  weld the tongue of your galvanized trailer back together, and you don't know what wire to use...Of course you want galvanized wire. Welding shops won't have it, but yer local mom and pop hardware store should keep a dusty spool on the shelf. 'Course it may not feed well, and then there is the zinc poisoning...Sarcasm aside, I might replace the entire tongue. Is that it, or is it just one side?  Your picture is not wide enough to tell.  If I did repair that section, I would try to find a smaller tube that nests inside of what you have, to sleeve the repaired area, or even form a backer for the inside. Full pen weld the joint, and fish plate the outside. Of course using accepted methods to construct the plates, and eliminate stress risers. I would use 7018, and not a small mig. Given the questions asked and lack of information, I have a bad feeling about this repair attempt.
