Does anyone now what type of tool is used to clean the end of tube like the attached photo that leaves the hard, straight line? I'm assuming it's something that the tube slides into since the mid-tube clean spot was obviously done by hand.
Reply:My guesses would be a belt sander with no platen, or he could have rolled the tube across a table while holding an angle grinder to it, looks like he probably used a flap disc.I personally prefer angle grinder with paint removing disc for weld prep.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools

Reply:Thanks for the replies. I just realized that Tapatalk double posted this question earlier as well. I apologize for the double post. Originally Posted by ManoKaiMirror finish achievable via this tool,

Reply:Some sort of chemical cleaner, or the ubiquitous "copper pipe" prep brushes. The circular ones you slide over the end, twist, and its clean. Probably a variation of that one.Why fret, it usually gets painted anyway.

Reply:Could have been done on a lathe as well, with a strip of sand paper.-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup
Reply:The more I think on it, the more it makes sense these were hand sanded with some sort of pipe sander like what I mentioned. If they take the time to hand fit all these, and possibly hand file-fit, it would make sense they would hand sand it.Maybe they took some sort of cyl honing tool, flipped the arms around, and chucked them in a drill and went at it.

Reply:bmzeroThis wasn't done by any of the power tools, or methods posted.Did the cleansed area have striations - if so, are they Linear, or Circumferential?Or, did the cleansed area have a Satin finish? If striated  -  L & C - were done with a DeScaling Wheel on a die-grinder.  The hard line was produced by using a mask, like precision shim stock.  The idea with a DSW is to skim the mill-scale [oxides] without scaring the parent metal = no grinding or sanding! Straight sections are most easily prepped in a lathe [descaling wheel]. If Satin - it was [soft] bead blasted - after prep with a suitable mask.Any shop that can produce your illus.  chassis has all [or most] of the available fab-candy tools.Descale/Bead-Blast - are my top two methods on carbon steel prep for projects at this level.Metal prep is the dearth of good welding - If anyone can provide a more efficient, and less invasive approach - please share.Opus.Last edited by OPUS FERRO; 04-22-2014 at 02:37 AM.Reason: Not enough commas/separation of commonalities.

Reply:Like I said.  I use my multi tool pictured above.  It's a just a poor mans burr king.  Very easy to get uniformed mill scale removal.  Stick the tube on the bottom side and spin the tube with your hands.    The even poorer mans way is with a DA sander.Miller 211 MIGThermal ARC 186 TIGHypertherm Powermax 30 Plasma
