Well after getting the shaft from my last shop Ive decided to try the union out. I actually started the process with the millwrights a couple months ago, and man it's a slow ordeal. And even though it's an initial pay cut for me I'm looking at long term. Benefits etc. So a good friend of mine and basically my welding mentor is in the carpenter union for about 20yrs. He put in a good word for me and him being one of the absolute best welders they have They took it seriously and offered me a single one meeting with everyone involved. Instead of one step at a time they want to knock it out in one shot! Hey that's great for me. Question is what should I expect at this meeting? should I be prepared for a "formal" type meeting or what? I know this isn't the normal interview for them either I mean guys wait a couple years to get interviewed. I like the idea of joining the carpenters because they the best training facility anywhere around and I would be a welder, As much as I enjoy millwright work some aspects of it I don't care for. I just want to weld and build stuff!! So I'm asking for wisdom from some of the more traveled guys here as to what I should expect.
Reply:seems to me the guy who spoke for you would be in best position to answer that question..
Reply:I went through a Millwright apprenticeship, I couldn't stand doing precision work! Working on conveyors was fun. When I moved to the North West the Iron workers had just about all the Millwright work. The Millwrights and the Pile Drivers were in the same hall. I got dispatched out as a certified welder on a tieback wall. Pretty much the end of my Millwright days right there. One day I got sent out on a derrick to fill in for a hand who was sick that day. That was pretty much the end of my welding days.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:CEP,That's me exactly the millwrights here do ALOT of turbine work and although the $ is great I don't care for it. The competition for the welders here is between the carpenters and millwrights. I'm hoping the carpenters work out for me.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Only if there is a lot of overpass or bridge work where you can build falsework. I worked a few turbines in refineries. For some reason I always got the sledge hammer and slugging wrench.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Originally Posted by zipzitHuh? Not quite sure I understand what you said. Why did the tieback wall job end your Millwright days? Why did the derrick job end your welding days? That doesn't make sense. Were you breaking union rules? If you weren't supposed to be doing those jobs why did the union send you there in the first place? If you were stuck working on a task not tied to your union classification, I can see why the union would be pissed at the business doing the contract, but I don't see why they'd be pissed at you. What am I missing?

Reply:my brother in-law is a union painter and keeps telling me to not try for the union as they have no work and I wont be able to get in and the unions are starting to shut down or some b.s. I really don't believe it as every union welder I know is always working and that's the path id like to choose. switching from automotive technician to welding an I believe itll be initially at a lose but long term id have so much more. hopefully it isn't too much trouble to get in and I can actually get in at some point. seems without college education to be the only lucrative career path.Congrats on the job !!!! As far as a break goes, you got a break when they hired you !

Reply:I would say for anyone looking to make a quick career change the union isn't the way to go. It's now a long slow process. I hear of guys waiting years to get accepted. I was only lucky enough to know the right people at the right time. As far as working I'm loving it. Guys that actually want to do thing the right way instead of the "cost effective" way. That one of my biggest peeves with my old company was having to do crap work bc the owner didn't want to spend the $$ on doing it right. Then having to put my name on it. Not sure about living out of a camper but I guess that's out there too. Sometimes if you wanna work you gotta go where it's at. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I worked out of town quite a bit. When I was an apprentice I stayed in a camper a time or two. Shut downs, and short jobs. Then I got to the point I wouldn't leave home for less than 6/10's and the company paid for my lodging. In Alaska it's man camps, close to town it was motels. On long jobs, rent an apartment. When I went into supervision the company would fly us home every two weeks. Or if we were working weekends they would fly our wives to the job site.
