TIG welding - pumping the pedal

I have a Miller DIVERSION 180 for TIG welding.  It obviously doesn't offer a pulse setting.  So when I TIG, I am pumping the pedal to produce the convolusions in my weld.  I have been told this is not correct and it varies the temperature of the weld too much.What is the correct way to TIG weld?  just keep the heat the same and use the laywire technique?  Everybody has an opinion but I would like to hear from certified welders with lots of experience.  Any certified weld inspectors out there?
Reply:You will get a lot of criticism about pumping the pedal. I know I did when I mentioned anything about it but I still do it anyways because it's worked for me for about 5 years now and I've had no issues with it...that is, if you don't go to fast and you have the right settings. I mainly do it because the aesthetics is so huge with what I weld. I would like to hear reasons why manual pulse is a no go with some people on here.....My advice would be to practice because you are going to hear that more than anything. As far as the question on the correct way to tig weld....well thats kinda broad. Are you taking classes or just have a welder? What do you plan to weld? Reply:Pedals on bicycles are made for pumping.Pedals on tig machines are made for controlling the amps.If you're "still pumping" after five years, it just goes to show that bad habits are hard to break.Pumping the pedal results in an inconsistent amp (heat) transfer into the metal.  Varies greatly from "machine pulsing" where a high and low and duration are set.  You'll never hit the same hi or low (you may get sorta close) and the duration will vary."Bump welding" anodized aluminum is a form of manual pulsing, but with this technique, the amps are set on the machine, and the duration is controlled by an on/off switch.  About the only time I've seen it necessary to use pulse on aluminum.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:The only time I pump the pedal is to get the Falcon with it's 1V carb to start in the AM.......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
