so ive been trying to do as many different weld scenarios as I can and ive been watching youtube videos every night hoping to learn something. I came to the conclusion that pipeliners are considered to be the gods of the trades and everyone I speak with says if you can weld pipe you can weld anything. so now onto my challenge. I cant find any 6'' sch 30-40 pipe for the price I want to practice on so instead I got 6'' sch 10 and I don't have any 6010 yet so im running 7018 3/32 at around 68-70 amps (if im reading my machine correctly) fine current is 3-5 and amperage is 75. im having trouble open root. I found its best to run about a finger nails air gap and my land is slightly larger then the rod. my biggest question is if you were to do it how would you set it up as far as land air gap bevel and with the rod I have amperage and any other setup differences that I may not know of.
Reply:I wouldn't worry too much about learning to pipeline on 6" sch 10 with 7018 rods. Might come in handy somewhere but sounds like a real pita and you won't see it on any high pressure gas piping
Reply:i realize ill more then likely never encounter this. but my logic of thinking is. if I can root in this thing stuff then I can surely root in sch 40 or larger as well as fill and cap. I may be wrong about the root because itll take more amperage and ill probably blow about as many holes in a sch 40 root as I am in this one till I learn but atleast im learning uphill and overheard....kind of
Reply:you really need some 6010.  6011 would be better than 7018 by 5 times.   7018 just doesn't have the characteristics for open root.   you have a good attitude and ambition though    just wait till you get the right rod for open root
Reply:I have fleetweld 6011 1/8'' and I hate it. on the lowest amperage it lights the length of the rod on fire no matter polarity. im almost positive I got junk rod. next chance I have (wont be for about a week) ill run to my lws and buy 6010 now that I have a dc only machine. I had bought the 6011 because I only had a functioning ac only machine.
Reply:Thin pipe is good to practice on it builds heat in a hurry and you can make a big mess in a hurry. But it is 10fold harder than sch.40 in my opinion. You won't see much gas line that thin but you will see some I can't imagine trying to uphill a 7018 root in it. Get some 3/32 5p+ For roots and some 1/8" 70+ For everything else maybe some 5/32 70+ also
Reply:after you get the root down, don't use to big of dia. 7018 for cover.   try some 3/32 7018 and tie them together.  You'll find the molten slag is hard to control and easy to entrap in your weld,  being out of position in that groove and all w/ larger dia 7018 .
Reply:I'm not so sure pipe welders are the gods when it comes to welding. I know a pipe welder that welder pipe for 40 years and he couldn't weld anything else worth the damn. He worked on the Alaskan pipe line and he was an outstanding pipe welder but when it came to welding other stuff he failed miserably.Just because your a great pipe welder doesn't mean that same person is a well rounded welder in other processes.
Reply:well pipeliners think they are the gods of welding thats for sureVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:^ nice!   Pipelines make the money of gods lolGet some 6010 5p++++. If you are in the US and welding pipe this is literally almost always used to put a root in a pipe. The sequence of passes in a pipe joint are Root, hot pass, fill, cap. Use 3/32 7018 for every pass except for the root.Local 83
Reply:What kind of pipe welding are you trying to learn. Pipelines almost never use any 7018 and are all welded downhill it's a different skillset than uphill welding and a lot faster
Reply:Here's what I do for 7018 open root. A heavy 1/16 to 5/64-inch land, use a 5/64-inch drill bit for the gap. 3/32-inch 7018 run on DCEN about 65 to 70-amps. Reply:6" sch.10....that's a little over 1/8" wall thickness.  Way too thin to learn uphill.  If you want to do something productive, draw a line around it, and run passes around and around left and right.  Then get something thicker (4" sch 80) to practice roots.

Reply:A 7018 open root weld! Damn CEPThat is something I never mastered, I had a very tough time with it and eventually just gave up. Good job manLocal 83
Reply:that does look like something special.   Keep in mind your eyesight and coordination is a big factor.  Do you play any pool?   What's your eyesight when you go to the dmv?
