these are some lightweight gates i made for the secure housing unit in the prison i work in. they have a hatch so the inmate can be un-cuffed after he enters the shower. the original hinges i used on the other side of the cellblock rusted solid after a couple months so i made new ones from flat stock, pipe and round bar. they have lots of play so water can drain freely. Attached Images
Reply:details of shop made shower hinges. on top of the hatch is a cell door handle i made using 2 short pcs of angle iron and a short length of 7/8 round stock leftover from making a standard barred prison gate. Attached Images
Reply:this is the frame work for a 2 cell holding pen that my helper and i are currently working on. it's framed out in 2"x2" square tubing with 1 1/2" angle iron fitted into it to hold expanded metal. to secure it to the brick walls and concrete floor we used angle iron lugs drilled for a 5/8th. pin plus we drilled through the wall in 3 places using 3/8th threaded rod and fish plates. i'll post more pics as the job progresses Attached Images
Reply:this is showing how we anchored the pen to the wall. also this is the angle iron fitted to the tubing to hold #9 expanded metal Attached Images
Reply:this is the welding machine i use whenever i'm out of my shop. i have to say i'm very partial to red. i met this machine when i started working for the doc 25 years ago and it was ancient then. i had to fabricate a new current crank but it welds great. the only problem is it weighs a ton and it's about a quarter mile (walking distance) from the iron shop to this job-site. Reply:this is a food warmer i had to tack stainless steel expanded metal to because the inmates were breaking off the vent louvers to make weapons. Attached Images
Reply:thanks 7a!
Reply:close up of the food warmer. this was kinda tricky because the material they used to build this was very thin. i used a 3/32 in rod Attached Images
Reply:in my down time(there doesn't seem to be much of that lately) i like to do some fooling around with the torch to express my artistic side. Attached Images
Reply:too much contact! you wouldn't believe the stuff they use to make weapons out of.
Reply:some "genuine african art" made from an old electrical panel cover. Attached Images
Reply:Why is it framed out on the back wall? You wont be putting expanded metal there will you?
Reply:it's going to have a roof, the back wall will support it- also it is fish-plated through the back wall to the outside of the building. no expanded metal on the back wall. it will have one bench in each cell.Last edited by docwelder; 11-30-2012 at 09:05 PM.
Reply:Funny. You weld. I weld. You contact inmates. I contact inmates. I minister at the Yuma County Adult Detention Center. Only I am not allowed to bring anything metal in! lol. They even wand my watch when I go through the metal detector. Why would you wand a watch? You know it is metal, you can see it. makes me giggle.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:it was 310. it's great for welding stainless of unknown composition where pre-heat isn't an option and it works great for welding mild steel to stainless. i can't recall the brand offhand.

Reply:Nice Job again on the shower door Doc, Do you paint them afterwards or prime them to stop them going rusty? After all you don't want a rusty door in a prison It must be hard for you to think about designing these things when you've got at the back of your mind about security and safety, and if you've made it strong enough etc..It might pay as well to design a soap picker to pick up the soap from the floor of the shower after all you never bend down in the shower room Loving the T Shirt Doc
Reply:I cannot criticize your work as I am certain you are doing what is required and expected.  But I am certain that any metal used in or around a shower area for public use (such as a municipal pool, etc.) would need to be stainless by law.  Your pictures illustrate that our prison system has evolved little from the dark ages.- MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.

Reply:as you can see the gates aren't finished. they need paint and the locks. these showers are not for the general public. the two great things about our clientele is that they have much more important  things to worry about in the showers than what the gates are constructed of and they have limited access to the complaint dept.
