I'm taking some welding classes, and today they had us try out hand at oxy-fuel welding. 14ga coupons, 3/32" filler, size 0 tip, 5/5 psiFirst was to run a "bead" with no filler to practice controlling heat and not burning holes.Next was a straight bead with 3/32 filler rod. Welded right to left, pushing the puddle. I got my rhythm sorted out about halfway through the weld.Next up, my first attempt at a butt weld, 3/32" gap with 3/32" filler., No backer. The front sure ain't pretty, but it had good penetration, save a couple cold spots.Second butt weld, which was welded left to right, pushing. Full penetration, and a nicer looking bead. It got a little hot in a couple places, and I didn't fill the end properly. All in all, a fairly successful first attempt, I think.Last edited by anickode; 05-09-2012 at 02:42 PM.

Reply:Very good for first time!! Bob
Reply:You can see how the heat in the metal is rising all along the bead. Overall heat control is where it's at! Looks ok, nice job. City of L.A. Reply:Your welds look good to me for a first attempt.I still suspect O/A is a better way to learn than electric welding.Good to see old school.
Reply:Those look great. I just picked up a old "new in the box" Purox w200 set-up. I'm thinking I can slow my welding down to more of "my speed" and get more in control. Did you feel more in control with the o/a than a MiG? |
