I am going to be TIG welding a 1.75" tube onto a stainless steel tubular exhaust manifold and I have a couple questions about prepping it.I bought the pipe new from Columbia River Mandrel, and it came all oiled up. What is the best way to prep this pipe for welding? Also, the manifold I am modifying is about 10 years old, has a ceramic coating on it, and is used so it has alot of carbon buildup on the inside. I assume ill have to grind off the ceramic coating, but im afraid the carbon on the inside of the manifold will contaminate the weld?  What should I do?
Reply:Wire wheel, acetone, more wire wheel, and a tiger paw.  What kind of stainless is it?
Reply:Whats a tiger paw?Its typical automotive stainless steel used in aftermarket tubular manifolds.
Reply:A tiger paw is basically a grinding disc that is overlayed with layers of sandpaper. Kind of like a flapper wheel, but flat.
Reply:oh ok, that wont contaminate the metal using sanding discs?
Reply:They also make them round to put on a die grinder to get the inside of tubing.

Reply:, sorry, thats what we call them in the shipyards.
Reply:Honestly, I weld mandrel bent tubing all day long.  Always covered in drawing lube and oil, all you need to do is wipe it off with a rag.  No need to get carried away because it comes right off.As for the inside, if you're going to purge it and try and get full pen welds then I'd use a die grinder to ring it out.  If not, just weld it.Have we all gone mad?
