When I weld with 7018 in a t joint I always get a problem with the slag sort of clogging the arc when I'm welding and the finished weld has all the slag lying on the bottom plate but no porosity in the weld. How can I fix this. Thanks in advance1 270 wia weldmatic mig welder1 Abel arc welder1 188 bossweld arc and tig welder1 cigweld comet o/a set
Reply:Ive used some junk 7018 in the past that the flux/slag would smother the arc as I went along.I went to some good dry Lincoln 7018 and walah.  Problem solved.Miller Dynasty 200DXMiller Spectrum 250DMiller Millermatic 200Bunch of old blue dinosaurs....
Reply:Need more info to determine if its the rod or technique but as said, you may need better rod. Sometimes welding uphill into a slight incline will stop this if you have moisture in your flux. Higher heat setting, or a little puddle manipulation can help too.
Reply:What amperage??Might turn it up.New rods.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:Hello Oxyman, depending upon the position of the t-joint(sounds as if you are describing what is commonly referred to as a "horizontal T") an amperage setting on the higher end of the scale helps, also being sure to "center" the electrode on the joint line and use a rod angle of approximately 45 degrees(give or take)will help. Then be sure that you are dragging slightly as opposed to pointing straight in or pushing the puddle. Then one of the more important considerations and I believe that one of the other posters already touched on this, be sure that the seam line is either flat or slightly inclined if possible. Gravity, arc drag angle, and the force of the arc should keep the slag clear of the weld pool and allow for it to "round up properly" and not create the type of lower weld toe that you have described. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Thanks for the help guys. The weld is in a horizontal position with 150 amps and wia 18tc rods
