My puddle seems to be leaving a "tail" as I travel along (using cursive e technique). What I'm finding is that it makes a lot of sideways V shapes in the weld. I'm not necessarily looking for the stack of dimes look, I actually prefer a flat bead, I just feel like the V's (instead of C's) demonstrate a poor weld technique. I've tried changing the parameters, travel speed, stickup, gun tilt, etc, but nothing seems to fix it. This mainly applies to fillet welds, using .035" wire on thicker metals (1/4" - 3/8"). Any thoughts?John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
Reply:Probably still moving too fast.  Pictures?GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I think to fast of travel speed.Slow your circular motion down, let it wet in, and flow.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024

Reply:If you watch the back side of the puddle, you will see when it is happening, and determine what is causing it.I am with everybody else, probably too fast a travel speed. My point is, you need to learn to watch the puddle.I personally like to see a nice round backside.

Reply:I've added heat and slowed down even to the point where it's burning through, but it still seems to be leaving a narrow tail behind. I am watching the puddle and if I slow down to the point where it's round puddle, not a tear drop, it starts to burn through. If I turn down the heat, I don't get adequate penetration. I saw the video of welding tips and tricks where he does this method and I move at his pace, if not slower. Is there more to this than just travel speed? I'm wonding if my parameters, torch angle, etc just make it more difficult for the puddle to "flow" and it gets stuck lingering behind? Does that make sense?John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
Reply:try backstepping, instead of moving the torch in circles or e's move it forward and then backstep back into your puddle, might help.
Reply:I'll play around with it some more. I must be doing something wrong...John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
