Reply:Nice size shops. I'm hoping to bulid a 40x40 here before the winter. I have to go meet with the zoning appeals board now. I already got the approval from the zone board, then it has to go to this other group. Right now I have a 24x24 to work out of. Reply:I am in envy of some of these shops. My shop is only 20X20. I am almost done remodeling it. It was two rooms and I tore out the wall making it one room. I took out the sheetrock that was molded due to a flood that happened when the neighbor decided that he did not like the natural flow of water during a rain and damed up the waterflow (if I was not in the hospital he would not have done it, I was pretty mad). It directed the water right at my shop and I got flooded. It has been that way for 8 months, closed up and growing mold. Now that I am able to work on it I tore out the sheetrock and replaced it all with MDF, including the ceiling. I added beams in the ceiling and mounted a hoist for lifting things I can no longer lift. I am just now starting to put everything away (it was all outside under a porch) and should finish up soon. When it is done I will post some pictures. Here's a tip. If you are building work benches, look for office buildings being remodeled. Go talk to the forman and ask for the doors that are being removed. I got two solid core doors that are 9' tall and 3' wide. Makes for great workbench tops. They were free also.Sure wish I had the room some of you guys do. I have over 5 acres and was looking for one of those domes you see at plant nurseries. I wanted to get a 40' X 100' and use it as a welding shop. Unfortunately they are pretty pricy so it will have to wait. I was going to build it right over my existing shop and use the existing shop as an office.

Reply:WOW! I can only dream of having a space like some of those to work with - - at least at this point in time. After many years of working on my vehicles in the driveway (in the snow and rain) I am finally on the brink of moving into my new garage. Along with our 2 vehicles, the 26' x 30' building will also house all of my toys - ah..err - tools. It is not a dedicated "shop", but with the heated floor, 9' ceiling and fully walkable attic storage, it will be a HUGE improvement for me.Anyway, what a great site you guys have here. My day job has me in an office, so when I get a chance, I love to spend time getting dirty and fixing things. Hopefully, with this new space, my welder will also get a bit more of a workout.Keep up the great site. Reply:A lot of those big machines look like the ones in a machine shop here that are for sale (pretty cheap as far as I can tell). This guy I know bought a building and the machine shop guy decided to retire and just walked away owing some back rent. They are selling the machines to recover the back rent.I am not sure what a drill grinder does but there are several here as well as an Enco milling machine ($650 is that good? Has power feed), 60 gal compressor, drill bit sharpener, optical comarators (what are these for?) and a WHOLE bunch of other stuff, bench grinders, micrometers, etc.... Sure wish I had the cash to buy it all or even some of it. Since I don't know what drill grinders are for, I would make something else out of them, they look to weigh about as much as my truck. They have an XY table and there is a chuck that mounts on it. The head of the unit takes grinding wheels so they are for precision grinding of some kind. All are in good shape except for being covered with steel dust. They already sold a HUGE lathe.Bob

Reply:A 40x40 pole barn will run you around 9 - 12,000 dollars for materials...depending on who you buy it from and what you put into it. Add another 2 - 3,000 for concrete and then another 1,000 for someone to lay it. If you can build it yourself, which many people can and do...like myself, you save alot. Option are costly. Like the stick building above, if you use attic trusses, they are almost double in price but you add the benefit of more room upstairs. I'm doing a 32x40 and will probably have about $8,000 in materials...just to get started.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:mirco zone those concrete prices seem LOW! around here its more money for the concrete than the building.
Reply:Mine's only a 30x30 but I have a loft on one side so I have another 400 or so sq feet up there for storage. It was finished in March of 2006. It had to have a brick front and dormers to keep the neighborhood 'blue-bloods' and the wife happy. I'd have probably been happier with a larger steel building. Now I have to find the time to be able to get down there to work.I don't have plumbing down there because she said that if I did, I'd have no reason to come into the house!!The lift has been a godsend for my back, I've been known to get so tired working that I have fallen asleep on a creeper more than once. I have 3 220 circuits, one for the plasma cutter, the Miller 210, and the Air compressor. I made 2 frames on casters to hang welding blankets and roll them around when/where I need them and so far its been a good way to control the sparks. I need to get some pictures together with me all moved in.Make your kids wear their safety helmet. If Brian did He'd still be herewith us. It only takes one fall.Brian P.
